This antiviral program offers rock-solid protection for no financial commitment. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition provides all the necessities, including a tool for scanning your hard drive and e-mail, as well as a real-time shield to prevent infections.
By default, the application is set to search for new virus definitions daily, but you always can use the scheduling tool to change this. Should a virus create serious system problems, AVG creates a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode. The program doesn't tax your system when scanning or when running in the background and always proved effective in our tests.
The interface can't be described as beautiful, yet it is mostly simple to navigate. Sure, you can plunk down a lot of cash for an antiviral application with more features, but AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition delivers the goods for free.

Version: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5.524
"The average a free product can get"
Pros: The GUI is very simple and intuitive. The scan speed is an average one and the detection rate is very good. The product is still free and I don't see anything you could need comparing (this version) to the paid AVG upgrade(s) and/or the other companies such as Eset, McAfee, Kaspersky etc. The good is also it didn't get worse in all these years and I can say I'm a PC user for a years now!
Cons: I think the GUI should change for some advanced options such a quick, intelligent or smart scan and the scan speed could also improve so getting higher. The detection rate is above average in this case but this would be also a big question for me! Perhaps the people in Grisoft should consider adding an extra spyware and adware protection to this great application in future only because in the past few years this has become so usual for mosty all the antivirus programs. I mean it! Why not? Only because AVG is for free or?

"False virus readings and lets real virus through."
Cons: Too many False virus readings and it does not detect real virus unless they are very old.

Version: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5.524
Pros: Kinda light. Protects multipule things like emails, IM, etc.
Cons: AVG fails PC Mags tests at virus detection rates scoring lower than Avast, Avira, Norton, Mcafee, and all of the above. It's lower than avarage detection rates really make this a last resort product. Very large memory usage when it's scanning also lose points with me.

Version: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5.524
Pros: First off, it's free. AVG did fair on the user interface.
Cons: I do not like the way AVG Free infrmed user of infection... many pop-up windows and also the ad's included with the program are, IMHO, poor sales. I have used PC Tools AntiVirus Free edition, and decided to try AVG Free... and the PC Tools program totally blows AVG away. Along with PC Tools Spyware Doctor, I think it was a total waste of time for me to download AVG.
