Editors' reviewThis powerful utility helps unclog hard drives by uncovering duplicate files, but its multipane interface may confuse novices. ATopSoft FileCake's interface may initially appear daunting, as it isn't very well organized. While this is the case, we're still impressed with the multitude of options that give a quick and accurate scan.
In our tests, FileCake performed fairly quickly, and we like that you can adjust the search speed. You can find documents by comparing files byte by byte, or just by their file names, sizes, date and time, attributes, or even by checksum signatures. Filters are available to quickly search for certain types of files, such as MP3s and image files. Moreover, FileCake includes a built-in tool for line-to-line comparisons. Once the scan is complete, it generates a list of duplicates with file details. From there, you can choose to delete, move, or copy clones.
We especially like the quick viewer feature, which allows you to actually see what you're deleting without having to open another program. FileCake's 14-day trial is a bit short for our tastes, with all that it brings to the table, but we recommend this program as a nice addition to your arsenal of cleaning tools.
