ARO used to stand for Advanced Registry Optimizer, but Support.com changed it to Advanced Repair and Optimization to better reflect the program's enhanced capabilities. ARO's developers were appalled to learn that entirely too many PC users have little or no concept of system security. So ARO 2011 now deep-cleans junk files and scans your system for security risks. ARO 2011 is largely automatic, but hardly opaque in its operation. In fact, one of its best features is the way it explains things, such as describing each category in its registry scan instead of just listing them in a log view that is incomprehensible to the average user.

ARO 2011's stylish interface is fairly typical of the breed, with tabs labeled Status, Cleanup, Optimize, Backup, and Settings. We followed the program's recommendations and started with a baseline scan. ARO 2011 created a restore point, scanned our system, and displayed the results in Cleanup tabs labeled Registry, Junk, and Security, by category, with tallies of the problems found in each. It identified some registry issues and found plenty of junk files but, thankfully, no security vulnerabilities. We let the program clean it all up and were pleased when nothing happened, which was what we'd hoped for: ARO 2011 deleted the junk and tidied up our registry without causing any problems. That's been the biggest issue with registry tools in the hands of inexperienced users. Too powerful, they cause harm; too safe, they're not effective. ARO 2011 showed us that it could clean deeply, thoroughly, and safely. The Optimize tool required a reboot, and it did a nice job of compacting and tweaking our system's registry. Clicking the Backup tab showed us that ARO 2011 had already automatically created a full backup of our system, and we always approve of that!

ARO 2011 only fixes the first 100 errors in its trial period, but it will give you a feel for how the program works and help you decide if it's for you. We have no complaints and plenty of praise for ARO 2011, and had no trouble entrusting our system's maintenance to it.

Editors' note: This is a review of the full version of ARO 2011 7.0. The trial version is limited to 100 fixes and cleaning temporary junk files only.

"Scam software that takes computer hostage"

January 17, 2012  |  By Entouchable

 |  Version: ARO 2011 7.0

Pros

There's a chance it will clean up to 100 registry issues, though unproven.

Cons

It holds your computer hostage, not allowing any Internet access and not fully cleaning the computer until the user PAYS for the "full version".

Summary

Installing this application is equivalent to knowingly installing malware on your PC, I cannot BELIEVE CNet would give scam software 4.5 stars, maybe someone at CNet Reviews was paid by support.com. Also who in their right mind would decide to give their credit card number to a company that just scammed them for a maybe fake "full version"?

"VIRUS!!!!!!!!!!"

January 09, 2012  |  By phillippilkington300

 |  Version: ARO 2011 7.0

Pros

Great if you like fixing computers and you dont have a broken one to fix

Cons

First off, I run an IT repair company. A good sign of a bad program is when it tells you that you have hundreds of problems, 15 registry errors would be a lot but nearly 1000, its lying. In my case it was a new install too, I only had a registry error on my backup. I am lucky that I knew, the minute I hit fix it would have infected it. Read the bad reviews here, they are correct, last time I recommend this site.

 |  Version: ARO 2011 7.0

Pros

absolutely none

Cons

A friend asked me to fix their pc. saw this. Whats this?
tested on my standalone laptop. Aghhhhhhhhhh! They now need a new copy of xp - its even got into their 'reset to factory' copy after 2 months.
Delays. Phantom errors, mis-operation - after only 2 re-starts.
Is someone holding a gun to someones head there?
Standards Honestly!

"Legit program, not a scam or a rogue."

December 28, 2011  |  By TigerRaptorFX

 |  Version: ARO 2011 7.0

Pros

Can't comment.

Cons

Can't comment.

Summary

Many people here are clamming this program is scam or malware. That is indeed false. It is still very common that software companies will put limitation on their software to get you to purchase the product. Does this make ARO 2011 a scam? Absolutely not! However do to the limitation on this software. It is rather difficult to get a general idea how this program performs. Let alone a write a review on it.

Personalty I don't like the idea of gambling money on something that may not be all that effective. If they don't let you test the software for what is worth then move on to something else. There are plenty of alternatives to choose from.

"Sneaky little thing!"

December 27, 2011  |  By decoy57

 |  Version: ARO 2011 7.0

Pros

None I discovered.

Cons

Placement on webpage tricks you into downloading this instead of what you went for (Avast AV in my case). Clearly a scam to get you to upgrade after it finds hundreds of "issues" on your system. Not sure why Avast and other AV providers, or CNET, play along with this game.

Summary

This is the sort of thing that gives software downloads a bad name.

What's new in version 7.0
In ARO 2011, you'll find the added ability to cleanup junk on your PC and analyze your system's baseline security.
  • Junk cleanup will remove temporary files, bad shortcuts, memory dumps, temporary internet files and other junk collectors that commonly clog a system. This will help aid in improving PC performance while keeping your PC clean.
  • The baseline security scan will check to see if Antivirus, Antispyware, and Personal Firewall are properly installed and up-to-date. If one of these security areas requires attention, ARO will issue an alert at the end of the scan. These alerts can be turned off at the user's discretion.
