"clean but simple interface"
Version: 7-Zip 9.17 beta
Pros
flexible compression formats, simple interface, extract to folder, portable
Cons
simple interface is plain
Summary
I mostly use the Windows context menu item that extracts to folder of same name. The "beta" version (that appears to be perpetual even though it is rather old) is a little nicer than "production". I have a portable install on my USB toolkit for the several times I've been debugging on the field. It has been handy to have it available for the odd "non Zip" file I encounter.

"Excellent free alternative to WinZip and WinRAR"
Version: 7-Zip 9.17 beta
Pros
Despite being free, never had a single issue; never acted buggy in the least. Shell context menu allows for one-click extraction to new folder (this is a must for me). Executable files will run from within an archive and never require extraction.
Cons
No performance or feature-related complaints whatsoever. If anything, and this is after thinking about it for a min, 7Zip has its own archive format (file type = .7z), in addition to the others of course; .7z files aren't very widely used, oh well.
Summary
Prior to 7zip, I used Winzip for well over a decade, followed by WinRAR (which is still awesome, just have to click past the pesky purchase reminder - even though I did pay/register). 7zip has all the features of WinZip and WinRar, at least features that any power user would need, but without the annoying purchase reminder (which btw, is not present in WinRar if using one of the shell context menu options to extract/open an archive). Zero reliability issues with 7zip - and the price is right!

"Couldn't use"
Version: 7-Zip 9.16 beta
Pros
none (WHY DO I NEED TEN CHARACTERS WHEN 4 WOULD DO!)
Cons
After install & restart, open & couldn't get to the file i wanted to unzip on desktop. Wouldn't let me open 'Documents and settings' where all documents are stored. I uninstalled.
