CNET Editors' review
100% Free Chess Board Game for Windows provides users with challenging chess matches and also works as a teacher. This program's helpful tutorials and easy game play will make users of all skill levels happy.
We had an easy time navigating through the program's cartoonish interface, thanks to its well-labeled command buttons and onscreen instruction. The Help file comes to users as an excellent text-based tutorial, which explains rules and strategy. We liked the program's cast of opponents, whose skill level is noted next to their animated image, because each proved to offer different strategies and ability on the chessboard. There is an opponent for every user's skill level. Users click and drag their pieces across the chessboard with the help of a guide that highlights all possible moves. This characteristic allowed us to quickly make decisions and know each piece's limitations. When we needed more strategic guidance, the program's coaching feature came to the rescue. The Hint button provided us with advice on our next move and the logic behind it, which is a great way to develop a firm understanding of chess.
100% Free Chess is a freeware program. It bundles applications upon installation without asking permission. With its simple play and multiple skill levels, we recommend it for all chess enthusiasts.

"Loads too much does too little"
Version: 100% Free Chess Board Game for Windows 7.42
Pros
You can play chess with it.
Cons
There is far too much bloatware associated with the title. It asks for too much info about me before it works, it doesn't work without internet connectivity, which tells me that it is sharing stuff I don't want it to share.
Summary
This is not worth the download.

"Easy to use and install"
Version: 100% Free Chess Board Game for Windows 7.42
Pros
As a diversion it is OK. The free ware version is limited in choice of opponents but particularly for beginners , it is good.
Cons
The opponents in the intermediate range, which is all that is available, make too many stupid moves, thus making the game too easy.
Summary
Overall, a good choice, but will probably need the upgrade for tough competition.

"it's free and it's great!"
Version: 100% Free Chess Board Game for Windows 7.42
Pros
great for beginners/novices (my g-kids for instance, 6 & 7)
has tutorial
you can set level of play
during play you can request a 'hint'/recommendation
very forgiving (you can undo a move when needed)Cons
none (hey, the silly thing is free!)
Summary
i bought my g-kids a chessboard and a couple of books for them to learn and so we could play once a week once they've learned but they were dragging their feet having to read and try to play, etc. with the 100% free chess game it's a piece of cake --they quickly picked up on the moves per type, etc, and after an afternoon playing with it they're ready to begin to play and beat grandpa ... and it's freakin' free! later they can upgrade once they're ready...

"Basic game only"
Version: 100% Free Chess Board Game for Windows 7.42
Pros
Good for beginners
Cons
Will only give you minimum level of difficulty
Summary
You would have to pay for the whole program to find out how good it was windows 7 has a stronger chess game

"The free download is only to lure you into buying."
Version: 100% Free Chess Board Game for Windows 7.42
Pros
Nice graphics. Hints and legal moves display.
Cons
Suicidal sacrifices by the computer opponent ruin the game. (Same with Chess Titans regrettably.)
Summary
I won't actually uninstall it just yet, not until I find something better anyway. Back in the 1980's Borland's Turbo Chess beat the heck out of this version... sigh.

"Good simple chess game to pass the time or learn."
Version: 100% Free Chess Board Game for Windows 7.42
Pros
Nice graphics and easy to use. Nothing fancy no extra bells and whistles just a good simple game to be enjoyed by young and old.
Cons
Just same ad junk as a lot of programs have. Just don't check them or remove them after install no big deal.
Summary
People need to complain less about toolbar ad ons and simple ad junk and appreciate this stuff is free. So what's a little hassle if it costs you nothing.

"Watch out for the install options!"
Version: 100% Free Chess Board Game for Windows 7.42
Pros
Well, it plays chess well.
Cons
The game tries to install 2 toolbars and tries to make Bing my default search engine. Make sure you read carefully and untick all of those checkmarks.
Very annoying sound effects and random voice announcements that do not appear to have the option of turning them off.
Also cheesy pictures and uninviting backgrounds do this game no favors.Summary
2 out of 5 (I rated it a 1 star because of the toolbar crap it tried to sneak past me)
I don't know why the editor gave this stuff 5 stars.
