While we loved this file encryption program's easy-to-use interface, the request for personal data to extend the trial period didn't sit well. There's also a special caveat for Vista users that may turn some off.
1-abc.net File Encrypter opens with a poorly constructed message aimed at those using Vista. After a visit to the Help file, we learned that the publisher recommends Vista users deactivate their UAC (User Account Control) for Encrypter to work properly. This definitely poses an inconvenience for Vista users. Still, we were impressed by the program's easy-to-understand user interface. Simple command buttons encrypt and decrypt files, and we were able to jump right in without heading to the Help file. There's a trade off for the ease of use, though, and that's in the limited user settings. The program automatically deletes the source file after encryption, and there's no way to specify an output directory. The process was quick, but we had to do a bit of hunting to find the encrypted file.
1-abc.net File Encrypter has a 10-day trial period, but offers a free extension to 30 days if you enter some personal information. If the program had more to offer, this might be OK, but 1-abc.net File Encrypter falls squarely in the middle of the field. It's not the worst we've seen, but neither did it have a range of features that knocked our socks off. We had to manually delete a file the program left behind after it was uninstalled.
