Microsoft warns that the SP1 RC and the Refresh should not be installed on primary or mission critical machines, and rightfully so. This is not a basic Service Pack, but a beta, and should only be installed if you feel comfortable making serious and potentially severe adjustments to your machine.

If you installed the SP1 Release Candidate from December 2007, uninstall it before installing this RC Refresh. To install the Refresh, download the self-extracting EXE and right-click on the CMD file. Choose Run as administrator. This creates a Registry key to allow the update to install. Now go back to the Control Panel and go to System and Maintenance/Windows Update, turn automatic updating on, and select Check for updates. This way you stand a better chance of Vista detecting the SP1 RC Refresh on Microsoft's servers. Microsoft's documentation on the installation warns that it can take up to an hour to detect the patch.

Vista will automatically download and install two patches before running the SP1 Refresh, and Enterprise and Ultimate versions will install a third patch to make their BitLocker Encryption functions compatible. Users have noted that the biggest difference seems to be on laptops running Vista, where battery life increased. However, as this is a beta and a buggy and hard-to-install one at that, we recommend waiting until a more stable version is released.

A good patch worth installing

Pros
Has only really smoothed the creases from the release of Vista which was predictable. Looking forward for SP 2 which should implement some nice tools.
Cons
Only issue is lenght of time to install when other applications have been installed before hand.

Install it as it will boost the vista experience.

There is no obvious benifit from installing this, i suppose it can solve some compatibility issues. It does not affect normal PC activities

1.Slows down my super optimized startup(1 minute) to 3 minutes! 2.download was slow(not a very serious problem) 3.you cannot uninstall it This really makesme very angry. i have tuneup utilities 2008,wopti,ccleaner and other optimization software which boost my startup time to just under 1 minute,but after installing this **** from MICROSOFT, my entire startup just slow to a hog. now F*** microsoft.

together with the security, tweaking and default apps, I think SP1 is real added value...i have noticed a general, all round efficiency step up...from starup to shut down...scans thru to defragging etc...etc...particularly on HomePremium..the restore points summarily deleted themselves leaving me without a RP at all...wierd...this is now fixed..coolioI have noticed however that on HomeP copying from disc drive to the HDD has slowed somewhat....however on Ultimate its whizz bang...hmmm!...still i give it a giga thumbs up

Can't you read? Or, did you give this junk a good rating because anything Microsoft is good if you use Vista? You will hate yourself when you find your review shuved up the dark side so far a jack hammer can't get it out.

I do believe Microsoft, in their zest to improve Vista, they have released a system destroyer instead of a service pack. I know it destroyed my Dell XPS. I had all the disks to reformat the hard drive and re-install Vista or I'd have been up the creek without a paddle as they say. Blue screen that had no fix at all. Like the others after said blue screen, system restore was laid waste. It's up to you, but I'd block this install at all costs, at least for now. Change your update settings. Hide this bad boy, please. I did and I'm up and running fast and stable.

Re-formatted my PC three times because of this (can't say what I'd like to say) garbage. Microsoft has to be aware of these problems by now. I'm tickesd off so bad you just don't know. Fix it, now, or kill it is what I say. I've blocked the installation and am hoping I can keep my system running this time but theres no telling.

Read above and allow install at your own risk. Makes me feel like I've been used by Microsoft without my permission.

Hmmmm, installed ok on my PC.
Cons
SP1 crashed my laptop, would not boot at all. I'm an MCSE, but I still could not recover it. I used the recovery menu command prompt to copy any files I didn't have backed up onto a USB drive, before I rebuilt my laptop. Use with caution.
