VeraCrypt is free disk encryption software and is based on TrueCrypt. It adds enhanced security to the algorithms used for system and partitions encryption making it immune to new developments in brute-force attacks. This enhanced security adds some delay only to the opening of encrypted partitions without any performance impact to the application use phase. This is acceptable to the legitimate owner but it makes it harder for an attacker to gain access to the encrypted data.
This is a terrific replacement/continuance of TrueCrypt and works perfectly on Windows 10. HOWEVER, the authors have stated on their website that they prefer sites like CNET only supply a link, not the actual download. So, don't install this very much older version, but instead search for VeraCrypt's site and download directly. It installs and looks like TrueCrypt. You'll want to update your old TrueCrypt containers, though it has a backward compatibility feature to allow use of them. Note that the newer containers take longer to open now...a symptom of better encryption.
Worked on Windows 10
Mr Negative 99
Pros
It worked on home version of windows 10 when others I had did not. Lots of older software is not working for me on windows 10 and the encryption programs I had were giving me the new Blue Screen of Death. Windows 10 home edition does not have working Bitlocker.
Cons
TrueCrypt like interface.
Summary
Works great! Excellent replacement for TrueCrypt
mschuchert
Pros
Similar user interface as the now abandoned TrueCrypt. I was able to mount my TrueCrypt container with no problem.
Fast & easy.
Cons
I haven't found any yet
Summary
VeraCrypt runs perfectly on my laptop. Windows 7 Pro.
I only need a program to keep low level crooks from accessing my financial and personal files.
There is a slight learning curve to it but I had already passed this with TrureCrypt. This is one on the biggest advantages of VeraCrypt. Once you are familiar with TC VeraCrypt is a cakewalk.
does not work in Linux Mint 17 mate

Pros
works in Windows 7
Cons
does not work in Linux Mint 17 Mate
Summary
In Linux mint the front end does not work at all. Using terminal you can create a container but then you can not open the container. Tried installing it in two different ways but neither would work.
