For the Windows operating system use Windows Defender which is the built in anti-virus program. Avira is advertised to speed up the boot time of a computer. It did not work and spent a lot of time optimizing my computer and multiple restarts.
Summary
Using Avira Pro, be very careful of AUTO RENEWALS. The fist year I was billed $19.99, the second year $57.99 on an auto-renewal I did not approve. Now I am out of that amount and not using the program.

I went to Avira's website and installed the entire free security suite; (avira speedup, avira connect, avira antivirus, and Avira's web browser.) This was installed on a laptop with a fresh install of windows 10, running a core i5 processor @ 2.50 Ghz, , 1TB hard drive, and 8GB of ram. Never had boot time issues until this software was installed. then my boot times exceeded 3 minutes! so just for fun I tried running avira speedup. surprise, the before and after numbers were identical, but afterwards there was a nice pop-up from avira telling me that if I upgrade to the pro version it will remove 90% more of the stuff slowing down my pc. Well I uninstalled everything, cleaned up the file fragments left behind and.......surprise the laptop boots up just fine!
Summary
Just the antivirus program as a stand-alone product MIGHT be okay, but I'm not giving them another chance. Not dealing with companies that intentionally bog down your system in hopes of getting you to buy their product to "clean" up the mess they created.

i'm about to the point of paying for Kaspersky after the program updates of the previous FREE greats as in AVG and AVAST began using pop up ads bombarding your system... i hate pop ups... take the trash out and don't bother downloading this one either... it blasts you with pop ups, and you have to option to turn that off for a day or two... i'm still using Spybot search and destroy and when you try to Immunize, you must turn off Avira's control of the hosts files, or it cockblocks spybot's job. my laptop is a bit older Asus quad core i5 (4gb ram), with fresh upgrade to win10, and it's not perfect by any means, but i'll still get slow memory hogging Avira update on startup, and win10 notification that antivirus is out of date (after not using for a few days- a week). end all be all, not impressed, and i'll see how long i put up with AVG this time before breaking down and paying for a service. uninstalled. byeeeee

It slows down browsing noticeably enough, that I just wanted it off of my very fast computer. It felt like I was running a pentium processor and nearly dial up speeds again, on certain sites.
