Most Windows users are familiar with the Disk Defragmenter utility -- or, at least, they should be. Defragmenting your hard drive can improve your computer's performance by making sure that files are all stored in one spot on the disk. There are plenty of alternatives to the built-in Windows defragmenter, including UltraDefrag (32-bit). This program comes with a defragmenter and other optimization tools that can ensure that your computer is performing as it should.

UltraDefrag has a simple interface that will look familiar to anyone who's used this kind of software before. We clicked the Analyze button, and the program quickly performed an analysis and displayed the results in a cluster map. We then clicked the Defragment button and UltraDefrag did its thing. We decided to check its results by running the native Windows utility; oddly, that program reported that we needed to defrag our disk, even though we just had. We returned to UltraDefrag and ran its Optimization feature. This took quite some time, but when we were done, the Windows utility confirmed that our disk no longer required defragmenting; UltraDefrag had done a thorough job. The program has a fairly detailed online Help file, but it's definitely geared toward people who already have some familiarity with the concepts of defragmenting and optimizing your hard drive. Overall, we found UltraDefrag to be a nice alternative to the built-in Windows Disk Defragmenter, and we recommend it.

I suppose that the methods used might be okay for SSD?

Excessively moves ALL files to END of the drive to bring them forward by NAME! -- This is absolutely NOT how your computer works! You don't want adobe files before your Kernel. -- A good defragger takes into account that an HDD is a mechanical component of your computer and tries to keep it from working excessively. Now, I have no idea how this program implements boot files, I was too worried that it was moving everything from the beginning to the end. -- Reason this practice is bad... well, okay your disk is on a spindle so going from the beginning to the end, back to the beginning back to the end, moving small files... to "free up space at the beginning" is HORRIBLE on your overall life. (Imagine the amount of work your HDD does going from the start to end of a 1TB amount of space, yikes!) -- Saw no mention of implementing in documentation the layout.ini which is a major flag.
Summary
Just wow... I have yet to see a defragger that out of the box implements SUCH absolutely horrid practices with no thought in mind of HDD lifespan. I guess this practice is okay... for SSD. DO NOT USE THIS SOFTWARE REGULARLY IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO KEEP YOUR HDD WORKING AS LONG AS POSSIBLE!

It did a good job defraging my computer for the short time it was on my computer. It has a nice interface and it is free

When I first downloaded it I scanned with my antivirus and it found a trojan. My antivirus also later on found a rootkit on my computer as well. So I just thought I should warn you that is all. have a good day

In short, if you think Windows 8 De-fragment tool not as good as think. then Gosh, you are damn right about this! A software developed by no brainer's used by cow brains! Highly Recommended!

Note: The first quick defrag is slow, after that extremely fast. Boot defrag, has exclusions of many files that would be redundant to defrag. Boot Defrags files that can't be done while the computer is running normally.
Cons
No Problems, but maybe a few sample batch files to use. Note: But for the average person they are certainly not needed.
Summary
I have bought many a defragmenter. Would have paid for this program, as for my use, it is perfect. All that fancy optimizing, kept changing the prefetch xp, and superfetch on vista, just slows your computer done. Ultradefrag does have optimize along with plain defrag. This optimizer is different, it defrags and consolidates free space only. Doesn't move frequent files around, which defeats the purpose of windows prefetch schemes. That way the prefetch, superfetch are changed very little, thus the computer knows where the program is on the drive, speed. I back my computer up, after the full backup, my incrementals are 1/4 the size, be it to a disk drive or dvd.

Have an older XP tower with a hard drive that could never be properly defrag with MS utility (no matter how may attempts) for years. Decided to give this a try.... On the first run 67 fragmented files were reduced to 9! The anal retentive side of me decided to keep going. So I ran the MS utility and it seemed to improve even more. So went back and forth between Ultra and MS (about three times) until "0" fragmented files was achieved!!! Holly Crap!!!!

This defragmenter is special in all. Particular is his installation, it installs in window at the kernel level but all proceeds quickly and regularly. The defrags are very fast. In addition the program also allows for a more complete defragmentation at start window.

UltraDefrag is an open source defragmentation tool. Its engine is very fast, because it is created as kernel-mode driver. They are three interfaces to them graphical, console, and native. UltraDefrag reduces the file fragmentation, thus it makes disk operations faster. Also the program can optimize a whole disk placing all the files to the fastest part of the disk - to its beginning.
