Temp File Cleaner 4.4 promises to rid your PC of the temporary files and other "junk" that can and should be thrown out regularly. It cleans Windows, your browsers, and apps like Java and Flash Player. Unfortunately, neither its user interface nor its licensing is particularly clear.

Pros

Cleans your PC: Temp File Cleaner can safely clean temporary files from all or some of your hard drives, caches, temporary file folders, and other locations.

Color schemes: You can toggle between many different layout themes, with names like Pectoral fin Peach, Gangrene Green, and Clockwork Orange. The schemes aren't as garish as the names suggest.

Cons

Confusing layout: Temp File Cleaner's user layout is overly designed and more than a little confusing. For example, the tab for cleaners to be executed is marked by a bomb icon, and separate buttons for selectable entries and auto-hiding controls don't help the experience.

Free or not: Our biggest issue with Temp File Cleaner is this: Is this software free or not? The developer claims all of its products are completely free for personal use (with donations suggested), yet you're required to buy a license to unlock limited features, such as the option to display all drives.

Bottom Line

Temp File Cleaner is no more effective than truly free Windows cleaners. We're not saying you shouldn't try Temp File Cleaner, but its licensing and layout issues lead us to suggest easier to learn freeware, such as CCleaner.

Temp File Cleaner was designed to give users the power and flexibility needed to effectively manage temporary files on their machine. It is built on a robust engine that allows for complex cleansing scenarios and rules to be created with ease. Brace yourself for your computer to feel gigabytes lighter after you unleash the TFC temporary file destroying ninjas. More than one drive? No problem, TFC will allow you to clean any or all of your drives. The cleaning engine scans all accessible user accounts, deleting temporary Internet files, cookies, browser history, recent files list, Windows temp folders, Windows update uninstall files, empties the Recycle Bin, and more. You can customize your desired cleaning through the selectable options within the application. The process is not aborted by locked files, and can reset permissions if necessary. For convenience, the application is distributed as a Windows installer, and can be easily uninstalled at any time from Add/Remove program. Alternatively, a portable version is available on our website, which does not require an installation, and can be run directly from a USB flash drive (or anywhere). A detailed help page describes all of the paths being cleaned, and how to configure the various options. The Temp File Cleaner can easily be incorporated into scripts by using the command line arguments as documented. To achieve the best results, close all other running applications before running the Temp File Cleaner. For the most thorough cleaning, run as an Administrator account that has the permissions necessary to clean all of the locations on the disk.
