Student Pad for Windows

Used Student Pad for Windows?

This alternative browser looks like it is built on Internet Explorer, and combines a notepad with Web browsing. Student Pad splits the browser and notepad horizontally, so that the top half of the window is for taking notes and the bottom half is for surfing the Web. It sounds like an interesting project, but currently there is plenty of room for improvement.

There are some nifty student-based needs addressed here. Features include a built-in calculator with square root functionality, a calendar, a bibliography template, an e-mail client with Gmail and Hotmail hooks, an MDI editor, and a basic spate of browsing features. You can change your font, adjust the text and background colors, mark favorites, and view the source code. A helpful icon copies and pastes the URL you're looking at directly into the notepad.

However, the browser itself doesn't work as smoothly as it should, if it wants to be compared favorably to big-name browsers. It's slow to load pages, sluggish when scrolling, and flows like molasses when jumping into other windows. A lack of tooltips makes getting acclimated a struggle. Modern-browsing features, such as tabs and a download manager, are not supported, and advanced-security enhancements are present only in a "Web security indicator" that doesn't seem to work. For right now, Student Pad remains an interesting curiosity, but nothing more.

Pros
Student Pad features heaps of different functionalities that i have enjoyed trying and playing around with. The ability to view the source code for a website is cool, and so is the cookie viewer.
Cons
The browser is slow sometimes and it may not be the most secure browser out there.
Summary
I loved it! There is still major room for improvement, for either bad or good, but it is a great program, and i will send it to all my friends!
Interesting Prototype Browser

Pros
An attached notepad; ability to view cookies; ability for add-ons (presumably to be expanded). An unknown for exploits, which is definitely a positive when dealing with badware authors and users.
Cons
Slow to load. Seems slow to operate. Few inbuilt security procedures visible.
Summary
Right now, this okay; that's all. This doesn't even show up in Google search summary results. The e-mail address given is linked with some sites that WOT (Web of Trust) shows require caution. This means that the average user should use a lot of caution, and absolutely this should be run only on a user (as opposed to administrator) account, because as is this is a gateway to the computer. A lot of potential. Either way. --Glenn<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Apr 10, 2009<p/>A little sleuthing revealed this as a program probably to be avoided. As is there is no evidence of badware; there could however well be a back door. A "Google" of haxbro has interesting results, particularly with regard to blogs. Use with caution if at all; a virtual environment would probably be advisable. --Glenn
