Smart F.R. is a powerful file renaming utility that provides a quick and easy way to re-name large numbers of files so their Filenames are in a Consistent, Conventional Format. Downloaded files (such as MP3 music, Movie Clips, Digital Camera Pictures) often have unconventional, inconsistent, nonsensical, quirky filenames including strange numberings, underscores instead of spaces, Tilda's (~'s), extra dots instead of spaces between words, mixed upper and lower case, and so forth. Re-naming files one by one can be frustrating and takes a lot of time and effort. Smart F.R. was specifically developed to easily overcome these problems; it transforms the tedious and time-consuming task of renaming multiple files into a simple matter. Smart F.R. is great for processing and re-naming large numbers of files (MP3's, digital camera images) It can be used to re-name individual files, batches of files together in one folder, or thousands of files in many nested sub-folders.

Visual Basic 6 so it doesn't install smoothly on Win7 machines with updated Sys 32 DLL's. Doesn't provide simple way to exclude files. See BulkRenameUtility for a better system. I was expecting to have a smart lexical name modifier that would manage capitalization of common acronyms, but this fell far short. Uninstall asks for deinstallation of common files that should not be removed.

A significant array of renaming options. I have always been able to accomplish any file renaming that I attempted. I just had to put a little thought into how to accomplish some of the more significant renaming.
Cons
Renaming options were not blatantly obvious at first use.

Pros
This will do exactly as it says. It allowed me to add pre-/post-fixes, file numbers, add/remove dashes, spaces, etc.
Cons
It didn't do the one thing I wanted, which was to completely rename my files. I just couldn't rename the whole file without keeping part of the original, specifically the numbering my camera assigned to each picture.

I did'nt find the way to change suffix after the dot <p>(need to change flies .bak to .doc) if not implemented..... this feature should be incorporated for more powerful use of this soft. <p>very nice soft elsewhere. <p>.

All I wanted to do was rename files that a client had sent (it's a photographer's web site) that were all different names for the same topic/subject. Must have been from several different cameras at the same event. I was able to rename them all with a standard name, incrementally number them, replace ampersands and other goofy things the photographer had used, and maintained the integrity of his numbering system so we can match filenames with those pictures ordered off his web site. I juts wanted to replace stuff, not do a bunch of boolean crud. If you can find and replace in a word processor, and that's what you want to do with your directory full of files...this one can be beat! <p> <p>It does what it says, and that's what I needed! <p> <p>I'd pay $29.95 for this thing in a heartbeat!

I didn't like having to create an account with CNET/download.com just to say how awesome this program is. It took me longer to do that than it did to install, run, and change 100 filenames. <p> <p>Absolutely NO CONS about this program.

I am SO glad I have found this excellent utility. It has already saved me so much time and effort, and is worth its weight in gold... not bad when you consider it is also 100% free ! <p> <p>I have used other re-name programs before, but this one is so simple and easy it gets my vote as favourite. <p> <p>Sure, the interface is a little dated looking, but so what ? Its a utility program, not a game, and it does exactly what it claims to do with ease, simplicity and speed. <p> <p>Simple yet Brilliant piece of software !

Seemed easy to understand. Changed files with a menu of options. Renumbered and changed extentions. Everything I was looking for But.....
Cons
First time use it changed the name of all the files in my f:\ root directory. I don't know what I did. No real damage done this time, but it scared me. NO WAY TO CHANGE IT BACK. NO CANCEL. NO UNDO. Uninstalled.

This is a great little program. The tabbed interface takes the user through the sequential steps: (1) select files, (2) set renaming rules, (3) preview the new names, and (4) GO. <p>(1) File selection uses a folder tree view, offers various filters (e.g. *.JPG), allows individual file selection, supports subfolders so you can do one massive operation through all your folders. <p>(2) The renaming options are too many to count, including find/replace, prefix, postfix (both with date and counter options), upper/lower-case replacement, and much more. A userful preview pane immediately shows the effect of all your settings on several generic file names. <p>(3) The preview window shows each of your file's old and new name so you can double-check that you made the right selections. <p>(4) Finally, the "Go!" tab lets you run the entire renaming process with a single click. <p>It's fast: renaming 2000+ files took less than 15 seconds. <p>Highly recommended!

(Minor) Renaming preview does not show files in subfolders, only in the top level folder.

This is quick, easy to use, a small download, and Free ! it does exactly what it says it does, and is much more simpler than many other file rename programs I have tried. Highly recommended !
