Editors’ Review
Batch file renamers have been around for a long time, but MP3s and digital cameras have made them very popular indeed. Aaron Stewart Batch File Rename is a free file renamer with which you can create, combine, and save as many rules as you need to rename large batches of files automatically. It can handle extremely long file names, up to 32,000 characters, as well as MP3 and EXIF tags.
Aaron Stewart Batch File Rename's user interface is busy but well-designed, with a central file list above the rules configuration sections. The program opens with the New Rules Set layout and the contents of our Documents folder displayed. We could browse to any file or directory, of course, as well as specify subdirectories, although this tool differed from many others in letting us specify the subdirectory depth, an especially handy feature for rules-based renaming. The section labeled Rename Rule Set - New Rule Set includes the most useful rules grouped by function: Add, Remove, Add Tag, Replace, Change Case, and Split Name.
We started simple by creating a new Change Case Rule. In the rules field, we could choose from Upper, Lower, Sentence, or Title Case, and choose whether to apply any changes to the File Name, Extension, Combined, or Each. Once we'd created our rule set, we could save it by clicking Save Rule Set on the toolbar. We could also open and manage rule sets, add rules to a current set, select manual File Actions, select automatic or manual Mark Mode, and Create Scripts from the toolbar.
Once we'd created our rules, we simply had to press the large Rename button to start the process. A pop-up asked us if we really wanted to rename the files listed, with Cancel and Proceed buttons and a check box for tracking progress. We clicked Proceed, and the tool executed our commands, quickly finishing the batch. Another pop-up let us choose Roll Back or Done. The Help file answered any questions we had, though Batch File Rename proved easy to use. If you're looking for a free and easy tool for renaming your songs or snapshots (or any file), we certainly recommend this one.
