Puran File Recovery can be used to recover deleted and lost files or partitions. Files can be recovered from formatted disks also. Everything that is detected as a drive by Windows can be scanned irrespective of its file system. Features include very simple interface with recovery engine, quick scan that lists deleted files in a click and few seconds, supports FAT12, 16, or 32 and NTFS, deep scan that can intelligently scan a drive byte by byte resulting in high speed listing of many more deleted and lost files, full scan that can detect deleted or lost partitions and even recover files from formatted drives, scan not just look for lost file records but also detect different format files based on data patterns, full paths of deleted files will be listed, recovered files can be saved with their path structure intact, files are listed in tree and list views, and search box supporting wildcards lets you quickly locate your deleted files.

Needs tutorials on how to use. Deep scan take a long time - I guess it depends on the speed of computer!
Cons
Easy to use, straight forward template and it`s important to say its free, but user is encouraged to support by donating. I personally think users should donate so that developer can work to make the program work faster.

-Recovered 90-95% of microsoft excel files; 90% only as a lower bound bc I dont remember what I had. Very few files with size over 3KB were unrecoverable. Size <= 3KB were likely spuriously identified as being excel files -Recovered 95-100% of pictures; out of those identified that were damaged, I so far have found another copy of the file recovered that was intact -- the damaged one may have been an earlier, copy-paste-deleted version of the picture -Recovered 95-100% of Word documents -Recovered 95-100% of PDF files -Recovered a lot of video files; they're DivX and I need to download a codec for them to work, but I expect that most of them will work.

-Files are recovered as IMG0001; original filenames are not recovered -Files are not recovered in the original file structure, as I saw other softwares were able to do -The run took literally 7 days (I have a 1.8GHz quadcore processor) to complete, on a 600GB harddrive. This is a "con", but since it recovered more than other programs that took 1-2 days, it may be worth it.
Summary
My wife reformatted her 600GB hard drive via a reinstall of windows. We tried Recuva (was too buggy to actually work), some other free software (I forget which two), and some that let you see a previous of files for free (but charged $40 (paretologic) to $80 (I forget) for full recovery). Out of all of those, none of them had much success in recovering microsoft office documents, and all were decent in recovering about 80%-90% of pictures. None of these programs worked as well as Puran, for free. Recuva had a ridiculous bug that wouldnt let me recover a single file after waiting a day. Other programs, which allowed me to sample some files, did not recover specific excel files that I was looking to get.... Puran actually recovered multiple versions of that file, apparently as of each autosave (or maybe my wife copied the file around to several directories over time, Im not sure). I am nothing but satisfied and glad that we avoided a $500 professional recovery fee... if you find that Puran is taking days to run, don't worry about it, wait it out... if your experience is like mine, it'll be worth it. P.S. due to my reinstall/reformat issue, I had selected "recover undeleted files" and "deep scan". This may be why it took 7 days... but again, for my situation, it was worth it.

- recovered every file I want, including e-mail, large libraries with music, books etc. - no size limit: recovers everything you clicked on - recovery can be in folderstructure found on your lost hard disk. Easy

Took 2 days. So have a long breath. But at the end: I got it all!!! almost 500 GB was recoverable, I recovered 200 GB. Awesome.
Summary
Hard Disk crashed. Windows somehow succeeded in reformatting my user partition. And forgot to make a backup (stupid). But Puran Recovered every file I lost. Just everything. Unbelievable. And completely free, not like others, that only recover 5 GB or something like that. I am very, very pleased, releived, excited that it all works so effortless.

If anyone EVER has done the unthinkable (unintentional FDISK hard drive) and needed to recover badly needed files, than this product is definitely what to get. It is easy to install, easy to understand and this program SUCCESSFULLY restored 85% of my 'lost' files! *** NOTE: I used this program BEFORE RE FORMATTING my hard drive, so I don't know if it works AFTER re-formatting, and I don't plan to find out so...*** To the creators of this program : THANK YOU SO MUCH !!
