Parmen is a 2D (classic) or 3D (Star Trek) chess program. Use F2 or F3 for new 2D or 3D game. Left-click square to select the figure and choose its destination. Right-click for full menu options including three-way difficulty switch. Version 2.8 features three-way difficulty switch, save/restore game name on the title bar.
Does not work on Win7 64 bit, which is what everybody is switching to
Summary
The description says it works on Windows up to XP, so I am being unfair testing it out on Win7 64-bit (which it does not work on) - after all, this latest version is from 2007 - only 4 years old, and before Win7 was even introduced. It's probably great if you have an old XP machine - I don't know - I don't have one anymore.

Great Tri-Dimensional (Star Trek) Chess Program!
zugzwang4u
Pros
1) Very small footprint, for such a well-playing, full-featured program.
2) Nice selection of viewing options, makes it easier to analyze such a complex and
hard to view game.
3) Multiple move take back options.
4) Lot's of useful features.
Cons
1) The more plies played, the slower Parmen responds (even with Centrino Duo).
2) The help/menu system is a bit awkward to maneuver.
3) Parmen deselects self from play on move take back, annoying.
4) Primitive GUI interface.
Summary
Follows Bartmess's rules fairly closely, although board notation is different, and the attack board mechanics are slightly different too. Fairly strong play even on normal mode. In spite of it's interface weaknesses, I haven't found anything out there that rivals it for Star Trek TriDimensional chess, at any cost. A must download for the chess/Star Trek fanatic !!
Reflects the Tri-dimensional Rules perfectly.

Pros
This software is wonderful when you don't have an opponent handy or if you have an opponent and don't happen to have your chess board with you. This program references the rules from Andrew Bartmes.

The above two searches should give you a better understanding of what this program encompasses.

The program follows the rules beautifully and manipulation of the bard and screen is excellent.
Cons
I can't choose the color of the chess pieces (silver/gold) and that's it.

Pros
Functionality and fairly easy to use and understand without directions.
Cons
There are no on screen instructions, or options, to describe the keyboard functions in this chess game. Going to their web site when you can finally get to it is useless as there is no contact or help link or any link.

A key function of a chess game is the ability to "castle" with your king and rook. I continue trying to figure out how to do that but continue to be unsucessful. Although this was a free game I am looking for another 3D chess game (free or purchase) to replace Parmen.
