Namexif is a file-renaming utility that reads metadata embedded in digital photos and videos and converts it into structured filenames. The software extracts timestamp details from the EXIF DateTime tag and renames media files using a customizable format, such as year, month, day, hour, minute, and second, which can be combined to build a standardized naming structure.

Namexif also processes timestamp data embedded in video files to rename them using the same logic. Additional elements in the naming format include tags for inserting the original filename and for converting filenames to a specific 8-character hexadecimal format derived from date calculations.

What Happens When Dates are the Same?: If you have more than one photo with the same date and time, Namexif adds a unique ending to each file name. This way, no two files will have the same name.

Adjust the Time Easily: Namexif lets you easily change the time on your photos. This can be useful if you need to sync photos from different cameras or adjust for time zone changes.

Using Namexif is a piece of cake thanks to its wizard-style interface. First, select either individual files or entire directories of files to rename. Next, select the format for the new file name; all of the options include the year, month, date, hour, minute, and second, with varying combinations of dashes and periods. You can optionally have the program include the original file name and/or a specific suffix to the end of the file name. Time can also be shifted to account for time zone changes or erroneous EXIF data. Once you've decided on a file name format, click Next, and the program quickly renames the images. Any images without EXIF data won't be renamed. Namexif has a brief online Help file that explains its features, but the program itself is pretty straightforward; just follow the steps in the wizard and your images will be renamed with useful date information in a matter of moments.
