MP3 Trimmer for Mac allows you to make substantial edits to an MP3 file without the need for re-encoding, all in a single, easy-to-use interface. Cons
Doesn't appear to be actively supported by the developers, so when new OS X comes out, they're not going to be the ones to tell you whether it still works.

Editing is easy and the interface is pretty good. Delivers but it comes with a catch.

Edited files can only be saved in 128kbps. Come on guys, we live in 2014! We need higher bitrates than that! And your support sucks.

Summary
I use it for editing voice tracks and occasional music clips for websites, so the 128k bitrate limit mentioned in other reviews is no issue for me. Other editing solutions for this that I've tried, like Quicktime Pro and MPEG Streamclip, have a giant disadvantage: After you've made your trims and cuts, you have to save them as .mov files (Probably because of licensing issues with the company that owns MP3.) Many embedded webpage audio players are very fussy about formats they can play back. They will play back .mov files in a browser on a mac, but on windows they will often freeze on .mov and will play only clean mp3 files. As a result, you have an added step in your workflow: converting the edited .mov file back into mp3, and here's the big problem: all the tools I've found for converting .mov to .mp3 produce a <b>much bigger file </b> like around 2.5 to 3 times bigger. So a 20 minute audio clip that may have been 7 mb in the original mp3 recording, and maybe a 6 mb .mov after trims and cuts, becomes a 16 mb pig when converted back to mp3. And that can make web performance over slow dsl or 3G terribly sluggish. This is the only product I've found that gets around this problem. It gives a streamlined, one-step workflow with optimized results.
OK if you like all your music encoded at 128 Kbps.

Simple interface. Does what it promises, to a point.
Cons
Apparently only outputs to 128 kilobytes per second. I have most of my music encoded much higher than that, or VBR hovering around 200. The software will import it to work with it at higher bit rates, but only saves at 128. This is a huge omission, as we all know 128 is not the best quality (160 is the bare minimum for reasonable quality), and most other MP3 apps output to varying bit rates and even VBR. Therefore, do not delete or overwrite your original files. Also, "keep ID3 tag" selection is turned off by default for some odd reason. There are only barebones help files, especially for setting preferences; doesn't really tell what things do. And, apparently, support seems to be missing in action according to other review sites.
Summary
OK if you need stuff to trim and have a MP3 player without much space. However, it will not fix your original files and maintain their higher quality. If you want more control in editing (and saving to the original bit rate), seek out Fission. Not as idiot-proof, but audiophiles will be happier.

Once you edit your file(s) you cannot reedit them again... you will get error message as mp3 is corrupt. I'll give you example: After I batched several mp3 files and I deleted originals. I wanted to extend (Fade-Out) life from 4.0s to 10.0s, I couldn't, I get error after error after.... <b>Warning:</b> Do not delete Original files until you are fully satisfied.

Pros
Strange app that has no "save" button. You either have to use a keyboard command or go to a dropdown menu. And the standard keyboard command is not called "Save"

Also strange in that if you drop a file on it when it's in the Dock, it doesn't open and use the file. You then have to go to the place where the file is and drop it again.
Summary
Very simple and straighforward sound file cropping app. Does not mess with original file, allows metadata to stay with cropped file.
Does just want its supposed to do, and does it well

Pros
Small, fast, easy to use. Reliably remove unwanted lead-in and trailing silence, or sounds. Allows me to setup a fade-in or fade-out on recordings that start or end too abruptly. Cleans and helps repair 'broken' mp3 files.
Cons
While easy to use, there is a short learning curve to understand the keyboard and concepts. Not really a con, as any program probably has similar need.

I have used this product from its early versions - liked it so well that I registered it quite a while back. It continues to improve and refine over the years. It is very reliable and accurate on allowing me to : - Trim or remove unwanted silence at beginning or end of song, - Trim or remove unwanted sounds at beginning/end of any mp3 file, - Lets me add custom shaped/length fade-in and fade-out, - Will help to repair 'broken' mp3 files, - can split long tracks, - does all this without re-encoding - so original sound quality is retained. I use it on music files, and also on recordings made from internet 'radio' and audio conference files. (this probably sounds a lot like the program description, but I really have used it to do all these things on my various mp3 audio files.) Highly recommended. Mac platform only, as far as I know.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I have been a long time fan and promoter of MP3 Trimmer. It certainly is still excellent value for the money. I have however now bought Amoeba's <b>Fission</b> which clearly outclasses this as both an editor and for making equalising adjustments to encoded audio. Fission handles a much wider range of encodings (AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless & AIFF) and has far superior visual feedback and precision in snipping and joining. By comparison MP3 Trimmer is much more hit and miss and overall clumsy to navigate. I have used MP3 Trimmer to concatenate (join) audio tracks, a sort of tack on feature which never really advanced despite my feedback. It does this via a too-small pop down pane from the main window. Items dragged in from list view come in out of order. Some tracks lose part of long file names making them hard to identify. It balks at different bit rates and is extremely clumsy when batch joining files, as it hides the names of files whilst working on them then closes the pane, forcing you to reopen it to continue with other files. The odd user interface extends to simple things like the <b>Enter<b> key doesn't <b>OK<b> a join, it deletes a file from the list. I would have thought that is what the <b>Delete<b> key would be for. The supposed inclusion of IP3 data, I found to be erratic at best and required a check box to be ticked every time to work. It doesn't pick up on the file names when saving and as I said has stayed very basic. Fission is slower joining files but has only just introduced this as a feature, I presume at my request. It does let you do this more visually and you have the opportunity to join files of different bitrates and then save them back at lower bitrates, where this takes me an extra trip to iTimes with MP3 Trimmer. Fission is more expensive but does do a lot more formats and adjustments. It seems much more polished as well. It is still very new but will improve, judging by the quality of it's sister product Audio HiJack Pro. Try both before buying.
