Editors’ Review
Library .NET (Free Note Edition) from Fish's DotNet is a free notekeeping database and personal information management package. You can store, organize, and edit personal notes containing a wide range of data; create relations; search for items quickly using Google-like methods and a Paging Search results display; and open an unlimited number of databases and dependent nodes. It has a download manager, a full-featured editor, drag-and-drop compatibility, full import and export capabilities, Unicode support, backup options, and more.
The Library .NET user interface has a familiar Windows-style feel, with a left-hand navigation pane that offers a tree view of your databases and nodes, a main window, and an icon-based toolbar. We clicked New Database, entered a name in the Save File dialog, and clicked Save, and our new database appeared in the FishCode Library directory in the navigation pane. We highlighted the database and clicked Add, and a new node appeared below the database in the tree view, with a blank name field. We entered a name and clicked on the node, which opened in the main view. Adding as many nodes or subnodes as you like is as easy as a few clicks. Next we created a text file and saved it to the desktop. We clicked the node, clicked Import on the File menu, and navigated to the text file, which Library .NET added to the node. When we clicked on the item in the navigation pane, it appeared in the main window. We clicked the Edit icon, typed in some phrases, and clicked Save. We used the Search tool to quickly locate our search term. Next we saved a Web page in HTML and added it to our database. Its HTML code appeared in the main view, fully editable. We then Exported the page back to the desktop as a rich text document and clicked it, and it opened in Word, with all content intact. There are database query and command-line options, too, as well as Dependencies, Bookmarking, and Password tools and options for customizing the program's look.
Library .NET offers powerful options for storing and managing notes and documents. It may not be the best choice for those looking for a simple sticky-notes tool for saving quick reminders, and we'd like to see more assistance (in English, too) to help users get the most out of this flexible program.
