There's no shortage of registry cleaning tools, most of which offer free system scans that promise to boost your PC's performance, but only if you buy something. Many do more harm than good if you're not careful about how you use them. Then there's Eusing Free Registry Defrag, a free tool that cleans up the Windows Registry by removing blank spaces left behind by daily computing and when you add and remove software. Compacting the registry saves RAM, reducing boot and shutdown times and improving overall performance. Free Registry Defrag doesn't change the contents of the registry in any way; it just minimizes the registry hives.

While Free Registry Defrag is definitely free to download and use, you have the option of free registration to get updates, contribute usage data, and participate in the user community. You can also contribute a translation, if you know a language that isn't already in the program's extensive list of choices. The user interface is a simple gray dialog with a few basic controls, notably Analyze and Defragment, but there are also choices for Options, Language, and Help. Since this tool doesn't make any changes to the registry itself but merely deletes blank spaces, it lacks the selection check boxes typical of actual registry "cleaners." It very quickly analyzed and compacted the registry on test machines running both Windows XP and Windows 7, reclaiming several thousand kilobytes of territory on each and displaying the results with before-and-after capacities in the space below the registry display. That doesn't sound like much in an age of terabyte disks, but it's a lot of real estate in the registry, and a lot less ground for the system to cover with RAM.

We've tried tons of registry cleaners yet recommended few and kept fewer still. Eusing Free Registry Defrag is a different story, though. It's fast and effective, and it does no harm. Used regularly, it can help you optimize your system's resources.

Summary
I installed it. Used the analyze registry then chose to defrag the registry and then chose to restart my computer 3 times. It did nothing for me using Win 10.

Downloaded with a bunch of malware that I spent hours cleaning out! I am not making a joke or trying to belittle CNET. I used to have a lot of respect for CNET.

Ran it on a laptop running Windows 7. Looks like a keeper. Updated on Dec 23, 2012Update: Looks like it works on laptops (I ran it on a 64-bit W-7) but when I tried it on my desktop with a 64-bit W-7 system, I got a message saying it wasn't installed correctly or wasn't compatible, so even though I could still run the program, I decided to uninstall it. That's when I got another error message saying the uninstaller couldn't be found. That's when I installed Revo Uninstaller to remove it. I can still go by CNET's review but I don't trust it as much as I first did.

Pros
One thing I like about Eusing...they have a reputable name. I can trust their products not be be loaded with malware, spyware and virus'. This product does what it is supposed to do, basically, compact the registry hives. I got rid of a paid software that did this and replaced it with this utility instead, saving me about $30 a year in subscription fees. One good thing besides doing what it is supposed to do is, if you try to run it again too soon, it tells you that the registry does not need compacting right now...I think it was 2% or less. That's a good little feature.
Cons
I am using it on a Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit platform, no problems. The one thing I would like Eusing to do is to get rid of the registration nag before you use it each time. For such a little utility, and advertised as FREE, you don't need to nag me. This is the only complaint I have. If its advert is FREE, do not nag!
Summary
I can live with the nag, although I hate it anyway. Who likes being nagged? As long as it is SAFE to use (does not screw up my registry and cause a crash)and it continues, in future upgrades or version releases, to do exactly what it is supposed to do, I will use it. I am going to put this utility on my free software alerts thoughts on Facebook so other people know about it. Keep up the good work Eusing!

Pros
Easy to use, works quickly and thoroughly. A very good and dependable program. Plus, you don't have to close all your programs down when you run this cleaner, it works in the background.
Cons
Some repaired items keep coming back because you have to remove it phyisically but, the program tells you where to find the items. So, not much of a con.
Summary
I've used this program for 2 or 3 years and, haven't even looked at others. This is the only registry cleaner you need.

Eusing Free Registry Defrag is free registry defragmentation software that optimizes registry by removing gaps, fragments and wasted space in Windows registry files. Over time the registry becomes larger and larger as new programs are installed, used and removed. Even if this data is deleted from it when applications are uninstalled, the size of the Registry will not decrease. This is because the data will be marked as blank but remains in place. In this way the registry becomes more and more fragmented over time. Registry fragmentation causes overall system performance to decrease. Systems with a fragmented registry will take longer to boot and will use more memory just for processing the registry, resulting in decreased overall performance as other programs are forced to use much slower virtual memory. Eusing Free Registry Defrag can defragment and compact the Windows Registry in less than a minute. It will scan through the registry to remove any slack space, reducing the registry size and ultimately the amount of RAM the registry takes up, and improving your computer performance. It does NOT change the contents of the registry in any way, nor does it physically defrag the registry files on the drive. The optimization is simply compact the registry hives to the minimum size possible.
