Digital Catholic Bible lets users easily find Bible passages by chapter and verse or by searching for specific keywords. It's nothing fancy, but it's easy to use and is a great electronic alternative to a traditional Bible.

The program's interface is basic and intuitive. There are eight versions of the Bible to choose from, although only one is in English. Users can select a book, chapter, and verse from a drop-down menu or search for a chapter with keywords. Each passage is displayed in a large customizable reading pane. The font color, size, and style can be changed, as well as the background color, letting users adjust the display to their liking. The font size can be set quite large--up to 48-point--making the text accessible to readers with poor eyesight. Multiple passages can be opened in tabs, making it is easy for users to switch back and forth. Digital Catholic Bible has a comparison feature and a query feature, but it's not clear how these are to be used, and there's no Help file. Fortunately, the program's other features are pretty obvious, so basic use of the Bible is easy. Users will especially appreciate the ability to select favorites and organize them by user-defined categories.

Digital Catholic Bible is free. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users, although we think it's shame that the program contains features that may not be usable because they're not explained.

Version 1.3 introduces improvements to the help files (in english and spanish), to the interface translations and several bugfixes and tweaks.

Summary
Any download that has so many unwanted programs load along with it does not meet with my approval. It took 15 minutes to find and delete the "crap" that came with it

Pros
The 1.3 version I downloaded has two English translations, the Douay-Rheims and the Christian Community Bible. It also has a short Help file. I liked the simple (after I figured out how to set it up) side-by-side comparison of the Latin Vulgate to English. The Digital Catholic Bible's design for this side-by-side comparison is excellent. Very easy to read and fast as I moved around checking on passages. Tabs allow many different books, different comparisons, etc. to be just a click away. No tabs are saved on exit, however. Favorites are easy to set and can be organized in groups. Side-by-side comparisons are not saved on exit, but other references are -- like bookmarks. Search is rather powerful, allowing: { "stirred up" -king } just as in an Internet browser. DCB worked fast on a Windows 7 64 Dell computer with Intel solid state drive and 1.73 gigahertz Intel Core i7 Q 820 processor.
Cons
Other free Bible applications are more powerful. Look elsewhere for a more comprehensive full-featured Bible application. The Digital Catholic Bible is on the skimpy side of the robust scale.
Summary
Not as a summary but an aside, there may be an easier way to set up the comparisons, but the first one I found that worked the way I liked (Latin left English right) is: SELECT VERSION (then select one of the two English Bibles) > NEW COMPARISON > (then select the Latin Vulgate) > BOOK (then select the book and chapter, etc). I will use Digital Catholic Bible only for Latin-English word study, but I will be glad I have the application on my computer.

Pros
All sorts of ways to look up and just read the bible verse by verse. Great chapter layouts.
Cons
A little slow in some areas. Doesn't default right away where you want it. But as a good cafeteria catholic, I can let this shortcoming slide.

Would it be possible to use the bible on software tools like openlp? Na dhow would one go about it?

Made on catholic canone; easy to use; the interface is quite good to view; it runs under linux with Wine without any problem.
Cons
It's not open source and it has no native linux version. The xml files with biblical text are strange, so it's very difficult to add other biblical texts. The search function sometimes has some difficult and it's not very careful.
Summary
I think that this software is the first that try to make available the catholic canone in different languages. But Xiphos, Bibletime, La Parola or The Word are more efficient and agreable. I don't understand the reason why this product is not open but only freeware: why there's not a linx/mac version? The xml files including the biblical text are formatted in a strange way: in my opinion, it was better to use the xml format made by OpenOffice; in this way, everyone could make a Bible version for his personal use...
