DAEMON Tools for Windows

DAEMON Tools is a software utility that provides virtual drive emulation for optical disc images. It enables systems to mount and read files in formats such as ISO, MDS/MDF, MDX, BIN/CUE, and NRG by simulating physical CD, DVD, or Blu-ray drives.

DAEMON Tools installs driver modules that integrate with the operating system, allowing disc images to appear as native drives within standard file management tools. Once initialized, it processes requests by mapping image sectors into virtual drives, routing them through its emulation engine, and responding to operating system commands in the same manner as physical media. It offers a free version.

Container file mounting

DAEMON Tools incorporates an image mounting mechanism that reads sector information from container files and reproduces them as fully accessible storage devices. Created virtual drives register within the operating system and appear alongside physical devices. Once an image file is selected, the software maps its data through driver-level integration, enabling consistent access to its tracks, sectors, and file system structures. 

It extends its features with disc imaging capabilities, allowing optical media to be copied into container files stored locally. These files capture track layouts, session structures, and file system metadata in supported formats. The imaging process translates disc content into a binary representation that can later be mounted through virtual drives. By combining imaging with mounting functions, it manages the creation and emulation of disc data.

Specialized emulation modes replicating copy-protection schemes, bootable media creation tools, and support for virtual hard disk containers. The software tracks and maintains multiple mounted images simultaneously, assigning each to separate virtual devices. Its session management framework records which images are active, how they are routed, and how the operating system interacts with each virtual instance. However, it relies on software-based emulation drivers, and it lacks advanced diagnostic utilities.
