  Free backups locally and to friends' computers Very reliable, have used for many years Good auto-management of versions PC, Mac, Linux, even NAS boxes

  Online backup incredibly slow if you have millions of files (we do - photos)

  Skip Crashplan. They will NOT protect your data. They just totally destroyed, without prior warning, three years worth of data from a five year long research project. Lost. All of it. Sent me a notice AFTER it happened. Their data retention policy believes that a backup is not an archive. Your data is NOT safe here. They deliberately deleted my data and THEN sent me an email. They seemed to be quite proud of this. Half a decade of my professional life just went up in smoke because of these jerks. If you can tolerate that, by all means shoot them your money.

  Pros

  -Easy to set up -Nice UI

  Cons

  -Slooooow; took over a week to back up a 300gb drive -Eventually stopped backing up but at least sent me emails to tell that it wasn't backing up anymore

  Summary

  Worked fine for the first few months I used it. Then sent me a warning message I had not backed up. Since then I have tried to get it restart backing up but repeatedly keeps cycling messages between "preparing to back up" and "waiting for back up" then never starting. Uninstalling and moving on to next solution.

  - Clean and nice looking user interface - Various backup destinations

  Cons

  - E-mail notifications did not work in my case - Changed files were not backed up although the backup job ran

  Summary

  I have de-installed the program after the first day.
