Editors’ Review
This handy privacy executable suffers from feature creep and a lack of documentation. Clear Files' spreadsheet-like interface isn't difficult to decipher, but program operation could use a wizard, or at least a guide. During testing, the online documentation was missing.
Clear Files primarily searches for, lists, and deletes select file types. With basic pull-down menus, users set any or all of seven file types and any one of three actions. File types are based on extension and the actions display, delete permanently, or move to Recycle Bin the found files. Testers found the file search speed merely average. The app features some other common and uncommon features. Clearing the cache and Internet settings fit with the prime features. However, locking the workstation, changing log-on settings, viewing the clipboard, opening shell folders, and starting select control panel apps seems tacked on to Clear Files.
One damaging feature is the program's password. Using certain functions locks the program and only the password can reopen Clear Files. Unsuspecting user may not realize they need to set a password each time they open the app. If not, they have to kill the process to eliminate the app from memory. Experienced to advanced users may like some features of this freeware. Novice users are advised to seek elsewhere for a less problematic file remover.
