Activ for Vista is a free program that claims to monitor your system's processes, DLLs, and Registry. Thanks to an unintuitive user interface and lack of user guidance, we never got very far with this program.

The user interface is too plain and too vague. There are three check boxes on the left side of the small window for settings: Process Start/Stop, DLL (Image) Load, and Registry. On the right side of the window are the file creation options. Not knowing where to go next, we checked off our monitor settings and clicked the Apply button. Nothing happened. We then checked off the option to create a new file, but again, nothing happened. There is a Help button at the bottom of the interface, but it wasn't working during our tests. A link to the publisher's Web site is listed on the interface but, par for the course with this program, it doesn't work. And even after a visit to the publisher's site, we didn't find the guidance we needed, only links to e-mail technical support.

If you're looking for a free program to monitor your system's processes, we suggest you keep looking for a program that is more intuitive and effective.

Pros
Not bad for a free tool. All information about presented in real time, so easy to see what OS is doing. Link between DLL and process loader. Can see command line that process started with.
Cons
No user interface for the messages, they all go to the debug output. One has to download additional another free utility to see them and configure Vista settings.
Summary
Liked: It does what it promises and it is free. I had to find a process that loaded one of the nasty malware DLLs. So the tool did help. Also found it useful in finding what each instance of svhost is running, as Windows Task Manager is pretty useless in this respect - it shows more than 10 instances of them running without any info what process each one runs. Actually, I could identify malware that my antivirus missed and removed it manually, including all its DLLs and Registry entries. Disliked: no UI as such, I had to use DbgView utility from SysInternals to see the tool output. It is free and easy to download. Being on Vista, I also had configure my Registry settings to be able to see debug output. The Readme.txt file from Activ download clearly says it, so no tricks here, it just how it is. I?ve read CNET review and was surprised that they didn?t bother to read the file specifically called Readme.txt. The whole download contains only 6 files, so it is easy to find. The tool is good for a computer literate person with some knowledge of OS, who knows what he?s doing. I put it in my toolbox, so I can help others:-).

Activ for Vista can monitor in real-time: processes start/stop, reporting process name, ID and command line. Loading of images (DLLs), reporting image name, process ID where this image is loaded into, image base address and size. Registry functions execution, reporting key and value names as well as status of the execution.

File open/create, read, write, rename reporting process ID (PID) that accessed a file, file name, desired access, share access, file attributes, options, buffer length and status of the executed operation. Activ for Vista monitors extended set of Registry functions. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.
