ooVoo is an iChat-like video conferencing and chat tool for Windows, loaded with useful, powerful tools that make it a viable alternative for small work groups using conference calls and screen-sharing applications.

A recording feature lets users tape video chats with other participants. Since the video and audio are being recorded to the hard drive, the only time limit is how much free space the computer's hard drive has. In testing, a nearly 15-minute, four-way video conversation only took up 95MB, which ooVoo can convert into a workable FLV file.

A conference calling tool gives host and participants a phone number to call. Other ooVoo users who call this conference line get plugged right into the audio that's a part of the video chat, and just like the video recordings, this audio gets archived too. Call-in lines support up to six people, meaning users can have up to a dozen participants--including those on the video side. Note that this service isn't free. An optional companion for ooVoo's video player can be used for screen sharing or file sharing, and fun facial overlay tool that applies digital masks either to users faces or to backgrounds. High-quality video streams are also supported.

Two qualms with the service are the audio quality, which sounded a little too compressed, and delays in the datastream of about a second or more. Besides being annoying, it can really force a heated debate to grind to a halt. Overall, ooVoo makes for a strong alternative to other VoIP and conferencing software.

"terrific product with horrible installation bloatware"

April 07, 2014  |  By edwardsmark

 |  Version: ooVoo 3.5.9.60

Pros

this is one of the only products that got the A/V sync to work right out of the box.

Cons

they have the worst bloatware installation i have ever seen, including a "secret" process that locks you into bing (bing needs all the help it can get) and the weather-channel desktop process. why would oovoo need to talk about local weather?

Summary

if oovoo would knock off the bloatware nonsense i will start using it again. we have the premium account, and i threatened them with an account cancellation if they continued such terrible business practices. they offered me an immediate refund instead.

when the weather-channel optional installation option is presented, you have to look carefully at the buttons. you have to click "cancel" which looks like you are cancelling the process.

i needed the revo uninstaller to get rid of all the crap that oovoo loaded on my two computers.

"Unstable on XP Platform"

September 13, 2013  |  By cdnsoul

 |  Version: ooVoo 3.5.9.41

Pros

Great video
Clear Windows

Cons

Not intuitive. Always have to search where usual functions are.
Opens unnecessary windows. Could easily be combined into one.
Shuts down regularly and unexpectedly.

Summary

Even when used to it, it still hides some functions and in the middle of conversation, it shuts down. The great video is not worth the aggravation.

"Not bad for vid chat, TERRIBLE for forcing spam"

June 02, 2013  |  By stnewberry

 |  Version: ooVoo 3.5.6.45

Pros

Doesn't suck for video chatting.

Cons

Forces you to install Ask toolbar, automatically changes homepage to ask.com.

Summary

It's a fine video chat program but I can't stand any program that forces you to agree to ToS AND install a toolbar with the same check box. Just run some ads for ask.com and leave it at that.

"Avoid like the plague"

November 24, 2012  |  By matthardwick1977

 |  Version: ooVoo 3.5.3.21

Pros

Pros - you can add multiple viewers; but then Fuzebox does that too and doesn't seem to have the privacy issues that ooVoo does.

Cons

They send your password details IN CLEAR in the joining confirmation email. Astonishingly stupid and unforgivable.

The software auto-configures to open automatically on start-up. WHY WOULD I WANT THIS AS STANDARD?

Summary

I just can't get past the idea that a company that would send your password in clear then needs to be trusted with anything else you do online.

Abysmal.

"Sends spam on client behalf"

October 11, 2012  |  By John2022

 |  Version: ooVoo 3.5.3.21

Pros

Because it put client at risk I personally ignore it's Pros as a video chat program.

Cons

Recently me and some of my friends find out at the time we use oovoo some emails are sent on behalf of oovoo user (me and one of my friends) from Outlook account of client. Receiver was not on my contact list and I found the problem when their spam checker asked for verification (A CPanel option they were activated to prevent spamming). Maybe more received emails from me but this one revealed spamming). After investigation I found the email was really sent from my computer and via my Outlook POP3 account but there's no such an email in my SENT folder.
Maybe that was a simple advertisement email but using my POP3 password for sending spam, by a popular application, is what I have never seen before. I'm worrying what else may it has done with my accounts, passwords...

For a while, I was wondering why such a useful service doesn't provide a LINUX version. I've got my answer now.

"Scam to put "Ask.com" on Desktop"

December 10, 2011  |  By art_patey

 |  Version: ooVoo 3.0.11.47

Pros

Since I never got past being a slave to Ask.com, I could not speak to any "Pros".

Cons

ooVoo akes control of your PC when you load it. Will not let you escape loading Ask.com as your default web browser. Then forced a reload of IE9. Rebooted and ooVoo still tries to take ownship my computer. To uninstall, you still have to let the program take control of your PC (to do God knows what)to uninstalll it. Otherwise it tells you that ooVoo is running on PC, even though I stopped it in Task Mgr, Processes, etc.

Summary

Don't let this "free" software take control of your PC. I am going to do a full system scan and pray for good results.
