Version: n-Track Studio 4.2.1
"Full featured, intuitive, low cost"
Pros: Great for recording, mixing, and mastering.
When I started computer recording (after decades of analog recording experience), I downloaded every free, shareware, or free DAW I could find. n-Track was the only one that worked right out of the box: hit Record and bingo, it recorded (from built-in soundcard). This trend continued: if I wanted to do something, I looked on the screen and clicked the button and bingo, it did what it said (well, mostly).
It has all the features we expect in a serious DAW (like Cubase, SONAR, etc.), including aux buses, groups, unlimited plugins, MIDI record/playback/editing.
It comes with some very good plugins (e.g., compressor, reverb) and has excellent built-in multi-band fully parametric EQ. Suports both DX and VST (and instrument plugins in both formats).
Supports automation of most parameters (track fader, aux sends, effect parameters).
Sounds great!
It's not quite as beginner-friendly as GarageBand on a Mac, but other than that I think it's the easiest for a beginner. And it goes much further into pro features than GB does.
Great user forum; helpful and friendly.
Cons: MIDI editor is useful but not stellar, and be sure to save often because mis-clicks can cause crashes.
Some default parameters that make it easy for beginners with builtin soundcards have to be changed for use with aftermarket soundcards, so be sure to visit the forum and learn about these.
Program is reasonably reliable for a DAW, but crashes can happen. And on some systems, some folks just can't get it to work well and have better results with other programs. This is true of the other programs, too!
