Internet Relay Chat is not as well-known as ICQ, even though it successfully combines chat and messaging without annoying ads. The IRC network is a virtual meeting place where people from all over the world can meet and talk. With mIRC, you can choose from an unlimited number of existing chat rooms based on personal interests, or you can create your own channels with family and friends. IRC is more advanced than simple messenging, so it may take a while to get started. With a bit of browsing, though, you'll find that the mIRC interface allows easy access to IRC features. It guides you through the initial stages, including selecting from a wide list of servers. You can connect to more than one IRC server at once and chat through proxy. By creating your own channel, you can even set up a virtual meeting with colleagues. This program suits advanced users keen to expand their chat-client functionalities. For first-time users, mIRC offers the most functionality of any chat program available, which can be overwhelming at first--but if you read the help files you'll be on your way to using all the features mIRC has to offer.

Publisher's description
From mIRC :mIRC is an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) program for Windows. Just as you need a browser to surf the Web, you need an IRC client to chat. mIRC is highly configurable and perfectly stable and has a lot of goodies hidden inside. It offers multiserver support, full color control, DCC-file sending and Get capabilities, aliases, remote command- and events-handling capabilities, scripting, place-sensitive programmable pop-up menus, and Web and sound support.
Version 6.17 added support for displaying UTF-8 text as unicode to mIRC, makes most file dialogs resizable, and adds ome UTF-8 related identifiers like $utfencode(), $utfdecode() and $isutf().

Version: mIRC 6.17
Pros: This is the best and the commands are powerful. Been used mIRC for around 8 years above, it still my favourite. mIRC users will prefer to play with the irc commands(if you keen to learn on it, u will find out it's cool)it allowed u to creat a channel, join any channels u like. Oh yea one thing very important for those mIRC users if facing server not too stable, try go mirc.com do find out the server.ini download it and replace in your mIRC main folder. Hmm...$20.00 for this program too costly? Go with Kvirc (which is FREE), you will love it, the icons(faces) you will love it!! But pls do not expect the servers of Kvirc stable than mIRC.
p/s: dont worried the Kvirc commands are totally same with mIRC.
Cons: It's not free, what else? lolz

"Such a long hiatus between updates, its not even funny."
Pros: Its still the same license.
The long hiatus was used to fix a BOATLOAD of problems and implement some new features and such. You should check out the changelog list...it is HUGE.
Cons: Long hiatus between updates. So LONNNNNNNNNNG. I can't even remember when version 6.16 was released. I just checked...here: verison 6.16 was released in July 7th, 2004...2004?!!!! ***?!!! So that is...what...1 year, 7 months, 1 week, and 3 days (the official release date of 6.17 was February 17th, 2006). Hey, so, if you like these kinds of delays between updates then mIRC is for you. I don't...i hate such long update times.

Version: mIRC 6.17
"Easy to use once you know commands"
Pros: My friend pointed this out to me. At first it was a bit confusing. I had never heard of IRC. But after using it for a while it is extremely easy. The commands are simple, and you can talk to people without a room full of bots, like other chat clients.
Cons: It has a very bland look to it. It's very Windows 98.

Version: mIRC 6.17
"This is the best chatroom program ever."
Pros: This allows you reliable access to IRC chatrooms with powerful features and access to a scripting language to modify things more. The chat medium is the best too. This is the STANDARD of IRC by which all others are judged. IF you like internet chat rooms, you have to have this.
Cons: Could be easier to use. I had no trouble but some people are nuffys and might struggle...
