Internet Relay Chat is not as well-known as ICQ, even though it successfully combines chat and messaging without annoying ads. The IRC network is a virtual meeting place where people from all over the world can meet and talk. With mIRC, you can choose from an unlimited number of existing chat rooms based on personal interests, or you can create your own channels with family and friends. IRC is more advanced than simple messenging, so it may take a while to get started. With a bit of browsing, though, you'll find that the mIRC interface allows easy access to IRC features. It guides you through the initial stages, including selecting from a wide list of servers. You can connect to more than one IRC server at once and chat through proxy. By creating your own channel, you can even set up a virtual meeting with colleagues. This program suits advanced users keen to expand their chat-client functionalities. For first-time users, mIRC offers the most functionality of any chat program available, which can be overwhelming at first--but if you read the help files you'll be on your way to using all the features mIRC has to offer.

Publisher's description
From mIRC :
Our editors say:
Of the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) chat clients, mIRC is one of the best programs for its feature set and scripting capabilities. Its fully configurable with an intuitive user interface, an events handler, and full send-and-receive capabilities for direct client connection (DCC) files. At any given time, the largest of the IRC networks may have as many as 40,000 participants, so finding someone with your particular interests or files that you want to share is rarely difficult. mIRC supports chatting and trading files on several different channels at once, and the interface makes switching between channels a snap.
Possibly the coolest feature of mIRC is the ability to create features. If theres something you want added to the program or some functionality that doesnt exist, you can use the scripting features to implement your desired changes. A word of warning: mIRC may not be right for the beginning user. Its not as easy to use as some of the more mainstream chat clients such as ICQ or Trillian, but for the advanced user, this chat client is hard to beat.
In version 6.02, the aop/avoice/protect/ignore commands now let you specify a network name; mIRC no longer closes a channel window on reconnect to a server; and more.
