Publisher's Description
From MetaGeek:
inSSIDer is a free Wi-Fi network scanner for Windows Vista and Windows XP. Because NetStumbler doesn't work well with Vista and 64-bit XP, we built an open-source Wi-Fi network scanner designed for the current generation of Windows operating systems. Inspect your Wi-Fi and surrounding networks. You can: Scan and filter hundreds of nearby access points. Troubleshoot competing access points and clogged Wi-Fi channels. Highlight access points for areas with high Wi-Fi concentration. Track the strength of received signals in dBm over time. Sort results by MAC Address, SSID, Channel, RSSI, Export Wi-Fi and GPS data to a KML file in Google Earth. Compatible with most GPS devices (NMEA v2.3 +).
What's new in this version: Version 2.1.1.13 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

"GREAT program for monitoring wireless signals"
Version: inSSIDer 2.0.7.0126
Pros
-Very easy to use
-lightweight
-Shows all sorts of information about wireless networks
-Able to apply filters to only show specific networks based on the field you choose, for example, you can set it to only show networks with no security.Cons
-cons?
-What cons?Summary
Shows everything from actual signal strength, mac addresses, SSID (even if they are hidden), The speed of the network, the manufacturer of the router.
It gives options for GPS, but you need a gps device i guess to use it.
Can monitor 2.4ghz and 5ghz frequencies, but of course you need a wireless adapter capable of picking up 5ghz signals for that.
Can apply filters to only show networks based on fields you specify.
Has a graph view for the networks and their signal strength. So its a good way to find out where you need to sit or aim your antenna to get the best signal. -
"Very nice peace of software"

Cons

"I know its my computer, but.."
Version: inSSIDer 2.0.7.0126
Pros
I'm sure its a good product.
Cons
I'm on a network and using my netcard instead of my router is a pain (I don't know how that works, but with my AT&T router, it seems to work). This thing won't work unless I'm on my network card. I thought about going to the forum for help, but have YOU used a forum lately???
Summary
From what people online say, you got a good product. But the rules don't work for me. If you have a better way (if you have two choices, why does the first choice not work for my computer when you don't even "exam" my computer.

"All this and it's free?!"
Version: inSSIDer 2.0.7.0126
Pros
Provides great visual insight into the strength over time of all the wifi signals within reach of your PC. Filter by strength gets rid of the nuisance signals. Click on signal of interest "bolds" that signal; so it's easier to pick out of the mix.
Cons
If there's a way to assign colors manually I didn't find it, but it's so intuitive that reading the documentation is optional.
Summary
I ran this on five different XP machines and inSSIDer performed perfectly in every instance as far as I can tell. Surprising variability from one machine to the next in terms of the signals detected and the strengths thereof, but results were consistent with the Windows and/or 3rd party wireless apps on those machines so I think the inSSIDer display had some basis in fact. Compared to the basic apps inSSIDer simply provided a time based view and much more signal strength sensitivity, exactly what I needed. And it looks REALLY cool! Thanks to the authors for a great piece of software!

"Well-designed app listens for SSIDs in my neigbourhood"
Version: inSSIDer 2.0.7.0126
Pros
Cumulative Station list, so even stations which are only occasionally within reach are shown.
Time Graph shows whether a station is in reach all the time or occasionally.
Channel graphs give visual representation of crowded bands.Cons
The application does not include other devices using the same 2.4GHz band - such as DECT phones and microwaves.
A graph indicating total signal load against channel would make it easier to spot the best (i.e. least used) channel here in town.Summary
Installed this to troubleshoot tardy response over WiFi compared to Ethernet - my downspeed is 10, my WiFi max rate 54, the signal strength 'good' or 'excellent'. Turns out my station is installed on Channnel 1 - which it shares with half a dozen statons at equal strength or even 'louder'.
Have now the app on my new HP mini netbook - far more stations are shown, and much better reception on the netbook than on the notebook - looks like the notebook is abit of a duff unit - still, it was cheap at the time.
A well-designed application which does one thing, and does it well: listening out for WiFi SSIDs broadcasting in my neighbourhood.
Useful:
Cumulative Station list, so even stations which are only occasionally within reach are shown.
Time Graph shows whether a station is in reach all the time or occasionally.
Channel graphs give a visual representation of crowded bands. Separate tabs for the 2.4 and 5 GHZ Channels.
Filters tab allows to narrow down.
Drawbacks are that the application does not include other devices using the same 2.4GHz band - such as DECT phones and microwaves - a graph indicating the total signal load against channel would make it easier to spot the best (i.e. least used) channel here in town.
Conclusion: a good utility to get a handle on WiFi troubleshooting.

"Very useful program"
Version: inSSIDer 2.0.7.0126
Pros
I like the fact that I can keep tabs on what Channels my neighbours are using which allows me to choose a channel which suffers no or little interference from them.
Cons
Nothing really.
Summary
A very useful and easy to use program.
