iKey is an essential utility and incredibly powerful tool for OS X that can eliminate repetitive actions. iKey allows creation of shortcuts that perform an action or sequence of actions each of which can be launched by key combinations or menu or event. This easy to use macro/automation utility can save time, typing and hundreds of clicks everyday. Avoid carpal tunnel, get more accomplished and have fun with iKey. An excellent manual written by Adam Engst is included. iKey lets you create shortcuts which can run an action based on:
- a keyboard equivalent or click from any usb mouse, trackball, gamepad and keyboard (mighty mouse, xkeys, contour mouse, shuttle pro, usb devices from kensington, microsoft, logitech, etc.)
- and/or an item of a menu
- and/or a programmed time/date.
What's new in this version:
- first update in quite a while. It took awhile to find a new programmer.
- buttons are fixed. Were partially obscured in the shortcut dialog. caused by leopard in some way.
- partially implementation of instantaneous registration for new users.
- type text fixed. we think this was actually fixed by a leopard update (but please test).
- other small bug fixes and ui improvements
- getting ready for more improvements.

"Easy, saves time, say goodbye to RSI!"

Pros
Saves loads of time, makes life a lot easier, great for people who want efficiency and ergonomics. I run a music production website (MacAbleton), I teach people how to produce using just one finger and no mouse, and I feature iKey as a central app.
Cons
None really. It doesn't have MIDI, but I use Bomes if I want to trigger iKey commands from MIDI controllers.
Summary
Why trash your wrist messing around with a mouse all day when you can use one finger to hit a couple of keys in sequence? iKey combined with Apple's Sticky Keys, Bomes if you make music, and KeyRemap is at the heart of easy computing as far as I'm concerned. Tutorials on my site for all these by the way (am I allowed to say that?)

Pros
Much cheaper than the $60 Quickeys which I have used for years, but Quickeys does NOT work with Lion.
Cons
Takes a very minimal amount of getting used to, but once you create a few shortcuts, it is a snap.

Support for this app is extremely poor, the developers do not respond to support forum posts in a timely manner, and in this latest release is appears that they did not test the app to see if it still worked on the supported Mac OS releases.

Ability to have Shortcut available in all applications applications except for certain ones
Recording Macros
Another app, Keyboard Maestro, is being continuously developed, contains those features and costs $36, iKey costs $30 -

This software is another reason I love my Mac so much more than my PC. I spent a long time trying to find something comparable for the PC and couldn't. All those repetitive tasks you do every day, let iKey do them for you! Open the news, run backups, load my most used web pages BEFORE I start work. The other feature I like is setting my own short cuts for tasks. When I want to be in Photoshop, I press alt + P. When I want to forward an article to my colleagues, I copy the article and press alt + C... it is fantastic!! This software will pay for itself with time saved many times over!!!

The best software ever. GREAT SUPPORT! and great automatation tools. It saved my life shutting down my server and much more. GET IT NOW! Don't wait your time using Quickeys. I OWN BOTH AND IKEY IS MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH BETTER. This is cheaper and EASY of use. And it runs a daemion not a whole process!!!!! IT ROCKSSSSSSSS!!!!! -
