"Have Always Loved It: But Had a Scary DeFrag Session..."

    February 18, 2014   |   By NotElegantlyStated

    Version: iDefrag 2.2.6

Have used it for years over several versions and it has always seemed to work as advertised and has allowed me to keep my older systems continuing to run with better speed. Easy to use. Simple interface

After years of using it successfully I ran an iDefrag session on my startup drive (after checking/repairing with Disk Utility, etc.) and for some reason it rendered my drive un mountable. And with a problem that Disk Utility couldn't see as a problem nor repair. Luckily I had a fairly recent backup, but had just added some content that I didn't want to lose.

To the developers great credit, he did try to walk me through many many complex command line and other steps to troubleshoot and/or fix what seemed to be a directory error perhaps introduced by iDefrag. I went through many of these steps unsuccessfully and eventually had to wipe the hard drive anyway and go back to my month old backup. It was a lot of work just to have to bail on it, and it shook my confidence in the software, but as I said, the developer really tried to help me out.

Creating Bootable DVDs to optimize a startup disk has been dicey. Many times the process fails, but not due to a DVD media write error.

I think it's a pretty great program. I had settled on it (and as is often the case for me) then just worked with it as my tool of choice, not being the type to keep searching for that even better tool. After my scare with the HD not mounting I wondered if there might be a more popular app for this and am still open to suggestions. But it seems to do what it says.

"Not allowed to read my own HD"

    December 29, 2013   |   By marikavs

    Version: iDefrag 2.2.6

    Don't know

Not allowed to read my own HD

I wanted to see if my HD with OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) on my old laptop (late 2008; 15" MacBook Pro) needed to be defragmented after it's become slow lately, but the iDefrag demo doesn't let me read my own HD. In my book, that's a FAIL.
