    "extremely poor customer service"

    January 20, 2014   |   By akweed

Version: ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 2012

    Pros

Thought would be an easy system for my older parents to have to prevent computer attacks while they use their e-mail.

    Cons

After computer with zone alarm crashed; forgot to discontinue Automatic credit renewal service for paid account. My elderly parents have info sent to my email. I missed the email from 9/13 for renewal and figured out when went home to visit at Thanksgiving. ZoneAlarm terminated auto renew but said would have to escalate my question regarding a possible refund. Never contacted us and stated when I called back that they "would contact IF was escalated". They never did that and will not refund paid subscription for the additional 10 months. Never actually used any of the year as the computer had died.

    Summary

POOR customer service and unwilling to help. Very disingenuous business practices and I would stay away from a company that is so greedy.

    Everything!

    Cons

    Can't find any.

"Was a great product, now very poor."

    January 16, 2013   |   By twj51

Version: ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 2012

    Pros

Not as efficient wrt memory management and user interface for fine tuning

    Cons

Is Memory Hog. It slows down my IBM Z61t down very, very significantly.

I have a degree in computer science and am an Oracle certified DB. I have used Zone Alarm since 2002. However, the new program is a huge memory hog. Also, the old interface of two or thee years back was far better when it came to fine tuning of ZA features.

By the way, a few years back, the Zone Alarm program became an excessive consumer of memory. And as you would expect, this caused a large number of complaints. But, subsequent updates fixed the problem.

However, the problem has returned. I have begun looking for a replacement.

    Summary

Was a great product however, now it is at or below average. My current version I am referring to is: ZoneAlarm Security Suite version: 10.2.078.000
    Vsmon version: 10.2.078.000
    Driver version: 10.2.078.000
    Antivirus engine version: 8.2.11.97
Antivirus signature DAT file version: 1110463616
    AntiSpam version: 6.3.1.4971
    ZoneAlarm Browser Security: 1.5.396.0
    ZoneAlarm ForceField Spyware Scanner: 1.2.104.0

I do not recommend this version.

    "Best Security Suite"

    January 04, 2013   |   By techprofe

Version: ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 11.0.000.020

    Pros

    Reliable
    Effective
    Efficient

    Cons

no cons has found so far

    Summary

I'd been used Avast and then AVG antivirus for many years before I switched to this Suite. My computer was still infected by virus/Mal-ware from time to time when I was using Avast or AVG. And my computer was slowed down significantly when infected which prompted me to start scan with Avast/AVG which supposed to have real time protection but didn't really work.Sometimes Avast/AVG scan found virus/Mal-ware, sometime they don't. Then, I decided to try Zonealarm security suite. The initial scan found some hidden virus and security issue and was fixed after scan. I've never had any infection/computer performance issues since I installed the suite 3 months ago. And my computer as smooth as it's ever been.I don't normally write review unless it is very important.

"Still The Best Software Firewall Available"

    July 26, 2012   |   By purfict101

Version: ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 10.2.064

    Pros

Provides "stealth" to common ports on your system, making it invisable to port scanners. Provides bi-directional control (incomming and outgoing)for better protection. Uses the acclaimed Kaspersky antivirus scanning engine. Is very customizable.

    Cons

Can be too complex for some. Uses a lot of disk space for log files (not an issue if you have a large hard drive). Can be overwhelming with all of the settings you have control over.

    Summary

While I feel this is the best option for a firewall and antivirus package, it is not a product for those that are not "techy". The vast control over the settings do make it very flexible, but also make it complex. Since my first exposure to this product, Checkpoint (formerly Zone Labs), has done a good job simplifying the interface and automating many of the features that ZoneAlarm excels in. Keep up the good work!

"ZoneAlarm is no longer the firewall it once was."

    July 01, 2012   |   By deando_au

Version: ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 10.2.057

    Pros

    Still a GOOD firewall, anti-malware & anti-virus application.

    Cons

The Gibson Research "Shields-Up" site (https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2) shows ZoneAlarm to be very much LESS than the full stealth firewall it once was; with a total of a mere 9 out of my system's first 1056 TCP ports set to full stealth. It used to show all of these first 1056 TCP ports to be full stealth.

    Summary

I have been using ZoneAlarm since 2001. Back in the days when Zonelabs (the original developers of the progam) ran the show. The Gibson Research, on-line test page "Shields-Up" (https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2) said it all, in two words; FULL STEALTH! That's full stealth in every catagory. Like looking into a black hole for any scanner that happened by. THIS is the reason ZoneAlarm WAS the "world's #1 firewall".

Unfortunately, it appears this is no longer the case. Since Check Point have taken it over, ZoneAlarm has gone considerably down-hill in my opinion. The Gibson Research "Shields-Up" site now shows ZoneAlarm to be very much LESS than the full stealth firewall it used to be. (See my pros & cons above).

Management at Check Point; please note carefully. The task of a firewall is to completely hide the presence of a system's presence on-line. I.E., FULL STEALTH.

As I said, ZoneAlarm used to do this. But now it no longer does. Instead it clearly advertises the user's presence on-line like a flashing beacon on a dark night, to any scanner that happens by.

A "Stealth" port is one that ignores and "drops" incoming packets without informing the sender whether the port is "Open" or "Closed". When all of your system's ports are stealth your personal firewall doesn't make the mistake of "counter-probing", your system will be invisible to any random scans, which continuously sweep the Internet.

Even if your machine had been scanned earlier and it's presence recorded by a would-be attacker, a return to this IP address will lead the intruder to believe that your machine is turned off, or no longer exists. Could you ask for any better? Your firewall protected system is acting like a gaping black hole for TCP/IP packets. That's very cool.

On the other hand, "Closed" is the best you can xpect without a stealth firewall. At least the port is not "Open" and accepting connections from the probes which continuously sweep the Internet looking for exploitable systems.

Anyone scanning past your IP address will detect your PC, but "closed" ports will quickly refuse connection attempts. Since it's much faster to re-scan a machine that's known to exist, the of your machine's presence could well be logged for scrutiny at a later date — for example, when a new vulnerability is discovered and before the exploitation can be repaired.

This is why it is important for you to keep your system up-to-date with updates for your operating system. Because potential malicious intruders are discovering new vulnerabilities regularly. Even more important with a non-stealth firewall in place. In contrast, that's very un-cool.

My hope is to inform users of this software that they're using and to seek the assistance of the vendors in rectifying the condition.

    "Complex, Poor Tech Support"

    March 28, 2012   |   By Ronegade

Version: ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 2012

    Pros

    Generally catches viruses
    Not horribly expensive

    Cons

    Resource hog
    Doesn't always catch viruses
    Doesn't directly support Thunderbird
Controls don't always function as advertised or are non-intuitive
    Uninstall is a disaster
Tech support is difficult to use (Live Chat only); often frustrating
    NO Tech Support phone number
Typical Tech answer is "Uninstall/Re-install" (NOT for novices)

    Summary

ZA used to be a great security program, but no longer. We've had to uninstall/reinstall several times this year. Latest issue: if the virus scanner finds a virus in an email, it deletes the Thunderbird inbox! (??). Yes -- several times.

Customer service from ZA used to be tops, but it's sunk to no better than anyone else out there. Their forum is packed full of users having to do complete uninstall/reinstalls, miss a step and you're done.

"Hogs resources and slows down the computer"

    February 10, 2012   |   By otinkyad

Version: ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 2012

    Pros

    It seems to work

    Cons

Very noticeably slows down programs such as Photoshop. With no other applications running apart from Zonealarm, memory usage is 50%. Switching off the Zonealarm anti-virus component and installing A.N.Other free anti-virus halves memory usage and returns Photoshop speeds to quick.

    Summary

Only consider if you have a powerful PC.

"I dumped 10x and reinstalled the latest version of 9x."

    December 22, 2011   |   By elkin233

Version: ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 2012

    Pros

hard to say, as soon as i started using 10x and saw the degree to which za has removed user control over individual programs i dumped it and reinstalled the last decent version of za - namely 9x.

    Cons

za has taken away user control over individual programs - gone poof!
    degraded user interface
could be other problems but i didn't stick with 10x long enough to say.

    Summary

i have been a long time and loyal zone alarm user. Don't you just want to yell when a wonderful product is 'upgraded' to a place where you have less control and less ability to customize the product? where the new interface is more cumbersone and less intuitive? i appreciate change but change works both ways and an 'upgrade' is sometimes nothing more than a euphemism for a major downgrade. Sadly ZA went in the wrong direction and what was once a product i gladly renewed i would not now purchase. stay away unless they fix their 'fix'.
