    "You're better off with Skype"

    November 22, 2011  |

    Version: Yahoo! Messenger 2.5.3

    Pros

    Webcam
Voice calls (along with text chat or webcam)
    Ease of use and set-up
    Convenient
Simple, basic and practical enough for most uses
    Cheap (free)
Everyone in other countries use it, so if you like talking internationally, it was the go-to app.

    Cons

They have stopped supporting Mac version.
    Buggy (crashes frequently)
Does not integrate with other apps
A Windows program trying to be Mac friendly

    Summary

Use Yahoo! Messenger for Mac (but after all these years it's still a beta program) if your correspondents use Yahoo! also. It's fairly easy to set up and ubiquitous around the world. But it's buggy and crashes a lot for both parties, regardless of OS, Mac or PC. Still, it's nice when it works, for webcam chat.

NOTE: Yahoo! says it no longer supports (as of Nov. 15, 2011) Mac for Messenger. It recommends using iChat if you have Lion, because it will integrate your Contacts list. That's the only value.

(But iChat STILL will not webcam connect with anyone who isn't also using iChat, regardless of having your Yahoo! contacts list.)

I'd recommend transitioning to Skype for the broadest acceptance of use.

"I use yahoo messenger to contact friends"

    November 2, 2011  |   By terrys01

    Version: Yahoo! Messenger 2.5.3

    Pros

It is so conveniant when I happen to have questions for family and friends that I want to ask and they come online and have'nt had a chance to call or they do'nt have a phone

    Cons

As of this time I have'nt had very many cons with using yahoo messenger, and those were so minor that they are'nt even worth mentioning

    Summary

I really think it is so great to be able to chat with a friend or family member and be able to see their faces while doing so with no cost what so ever

"It sucks but it makes best use of Yahoo!'s services."

    March 5, 2011  |   By 121mm

    Version: Yahoo! Messenger 2.5.3

    Pros

webcam, voice calls, "I'm Mobile", integrates with Mac

    Cons

slow, crashes a lot, several features found on Windows version missing (i.e. GMs and video calling), not really easy to use, ugly, does not integrate as good as other clients

    Summary

The only reason that I'm stuck with using this software is that it makes best use of Yahoo!'s services. Y!M has some very cool perks like buzzing and voice calls, and only this client takes full advantage of everything it has to offer in one package. As opposed to using, say, Trillian for text and Skype for video calls. And besides, in my social circle, all accounts are Yahoo!

But several other fun features are notably absent. The most notable among these is group messaging. GMs are absolutely essential in my social circle, and absence of this said feature has had me in gripes. Another essential feature missing is video calling. You can always have the webcam on and make a call, but absence of this unified service is rather annoying. Plus, I can't view a Windows webcam - well, in my several attempts, not one was successful. It's probably a bug or maybe the circumstances aren't right, but it still ads to the annoyance factor.

Yes, there is ample integration with Mac - I can choose my playing iTunes track and set it as my status. I can also assign Address Book cards to my contacts. But the latter is rather difficult to do if you have lots of contacts. Maybe there's a batch processor somewhere that I can't find but not finding it adds another annoyance. Another feature present that I had to dig up beneath countless settings is the Buzz button. And when you dig it up, they place it in a very ugly position. And pressing it is reveals an ugly BUZZ! I prefer the Windows execution better.

It's also incredibly ugly. The conversation windows are the prime example. Mismatch of colors, ugly buttons, they have it all.

Of course, there are benefits over the Windows version. Omission of certain features (i.e. IMvironments and theming) make the client much faster and usable, albeit more boring. The interface is much more streamlined. But then, the whole thing is too anorexic for its own good. I prefer an obese client than one that takes out too many of the useful features and leave behind such a bare bones client.

Nevertheless, it is still much fatter than other clients. And this makes it slower than other Mac clients. Another big minus. It's still usable and fun, though. And I absolutely need a Yahoo! client. I'm too used to Yahoo!'s client.

"OSX version Not as feature complete as windows..."

    Version: Yahoo! Messenger 2.5.3

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
After dumping my virus riddled windows computer for a mac, I have to say that the Mac version of Yahoo Instant Messenger is missing a lot of basic functionality that I had on windows.

For one, Why cant I create an alias for my buddies? some of friends have obsure usernames, this should be a basic thing.

Secondly, while I can view others web cams, why cant I talk using my mike and speakers. I mean every G3 Mac + has them built-in I think its a simple ask that the mac version be at least withing coey of the windows one.

Can anyone recommend another client that does have these features on Mac OSX?

I can't believe that Yahoo would put out a version that is so unstable for Mac OS9 users, and then disallow you to use the older working version. The best way to get them to get their sh*t together is to email yahoo directly about this. You can do this by going to this link and then clicking on the "No" button at the bottom: (replace the tt in the link below)

    "Same Problem"

    Version: Yahoo! Messenger 2.5.3

    Summary

It worked for one day, and now it freezes in 9.2.2. I have the older version, but when I reinastalled it, I got the same problem as the new one. I've tried trashing preferences, and nothing works.

Until they fix it, I can not in good conscience recomend this version.

With an iSight, it still has low frames less than 1 per second. I'm really hoping SuperWebcam will work better, but it doesnt seem to be with me.
