As the name implies, Yahoo Messenger Monitor Sniffer records conversations over the popular instant message program, but it failed to monitor an entire local-area network (LAN) in our tests. The fairly straightforward interface contains two large panels for viewing chat logs and monitored IP addresses. We found the program worked well when monitoring chat conversations originating on the host computer. However, the feature that monitors conversations originating elsewhere simply failed to capture anything.

Yahoo Messenger Monitor Sniffer makes it simple to save conversations, and it can generate easy-to-read HTML reports. The program's security arsenal includes password protection and quickly goes into hiding with just a press of a hot key. The 10-day trial period is plenty of time to judge this application, but each time it runs it records only the first 10 messages it detects.

If you need to record your own conversations, this program operates well. However, those needing to monitor their LAN will find that Yahoo Messenger Monitor Sniffer simply fails.
