The Xobni Outlook add-on is at its heart a tool to search for and find e-mail and contacts faster. As an interesting, but far less crucial, secondary function, Xobni also collects statistics, like the frequency you e-mail a contact and at which hour, that can eventually help you manage your social relationships.
Visually, Xobni displays as an attractive sidebar that slides in an out from the right and over the reading pane. It features a Xobni search bar, faster-acting than Outlook's own by miles, and a Google search bar for more general queries. The search results pull up people, messages, and the subject of e-mail attachments. You'll be able to interact with the profile, message, or files from there. When at rest, Xobni displays the profile it's collected on the contact--from a hyperlinked e-mail address and phone number to a Skype plug-in, Facebook picture, and LinkedIn profile, assuming the contact has enabled third-party sharing in his social network settings. You'll likewise be able to get at the contact's network, past conversations, and files from here.
Activate the premium version, Xobni Plus, for $30 (and a free, 14-day trial) and you'll open the door to broader search data (appointments and tasks), more powerful search terms (phrases and Boolean), and an advanced search builder. Xobni Plus also includes full text and direct e-mail filters. Best yet, Xobni Plus adds its index of e-mail addresses to the "To" field of every message you compose, sometimes replicating, but nevertheless vastly expanding, your address book.
Unlike many other Outlook add-ons, both free and upgraded versions of Xobni add functionality without greatly dragging down Outlook's performance. The interface doesn't get in the way, and, in fact, makes communication easier. Watch the CNET video review of Xobni:

Version: Xobni 1.8
Pros: Handles info consolidation fine
Cons: Hijacks Outlook e-mail address look-ahead, and nags to buy upgrade
Summary: When typing a "To" address, it will something hijack the look-ahead with a request to buy the upgrade. The only way to get the drop-down of Outlook suggested names is to backspace typing and try again. Very user unfriendly.

"Catagorized 1000's of emails like Picasa does images."
Pros: Xobni built a relational database between my 1,700 Outlook contacts, 183 LinkedIn connections and thousands of old emails. Now I can click or search for a contact, see our email history including shared files and shared contacts. IT'S FREE
Cons: I can't complain at all. The benefits far outway any inconveniences. I had read that there were a few bugs, but I have experienced none in 2 months of heavy use.
Summary: If you have a lot of contacts and use email daily you should really consider taking a look at this amazing tool. The installation was simple. Like Picasa (see Google.com) it reads, sorts, organises and relates emails with Outlook contacts automatica... read more >>

Version: Xobni 1.8
"Terrible, I just waster 25 dollars, read my review"
Pros: Good looking, works 90% of the time.
Cons: Exact-phrase search is broken. Searching for "welcome to my house" works fine, but searching for "External SMTP" or "cs_steven" doesn't. Keep in mind I'm talking about the same email containing all those phrases, so, there's no excuse.
Summary: I'm not recommending this to anyone for a while, I just wasted 25 dollars.

"Finds related emails quickly."
Pros: Quickly find emails (conversations) identifies contact from Facebook etc.
Cons: Could use contact info from Outlook as well as online sites!
Summary: A nice addition. I haven't used it long but am sure I will find other good ideas. I don't have much need for the stats but have found it interesting to know how much effort I can spend on one customer!!
