This free program provides a number of helpful tools for working with digital photos. XnView's pane interface shouldn't disorient most users, as it uses a tree-like structure to let you view your shots and browse your music collection. Our lone complaint on this front is that the more complex effects and filters aren't accessible via the main window and require you to double-click a shot before you can use them. Besides standard tools for rotating images and renaming files in bulk, this app also can convert pics among a wide variety of formats. In addition, you'll find tools for capturing screenshots and creating basic slide shows, as well as a simple audio player. We were excited to see a utility for generating Web galleries, but we quickly despaired when we couldn't get it to work. Still, we recommend XnView to digital photographers who already have a first-class editing program.Publisher's description

"Strong in its ability to convert file formats, weak in its ability to display"
Pros: Can read a huge number of picture file formats and convert them.
Cons: No installation program provided. When browsing pictures, there is no way to go to a specific picture. No manual reordering. You can't pan with the mouse. When viewing a picture in "full screen" mode, you can't pan, zoom, or go to any other picture without exiting that mode. No picture information is available. No captioning can be done. There are no transition effects. There is no audio ability. Printing a picture within the program is not possible.

Version: XnView 1.74
Summary: I downloaded this to convert a Corel Draw Image (.cdr) to .gif, and that it did. I was amazed at how many file formats it supported, especially for a free program. I havn't tried any of it's other features though. Plus, best of all, NO SPYWARE! How ... read more >>

Summary: I can't believe this program is free. No, I'm not knocking it at all - I think more programs should be free. It's nice to know not every programmer is looking just for a buck. XNView is an effective image converter/processor that has amazing abiliti... read more >>

"Impressive image management and standards compliance."
Summary: Took my breath away. I needed to generate single-page thumbnailled HTML lists of a directory, and this does it perfectly (though it pointlessly limits output to ten rows of icons per page, and generates multiple pages - bah!). Unusually, it can work... read more >>
