Editors' Review

+

We're big fans of software suites that auto-update without getting in the way, and that let you weed out unwanted applications from its roster without having to get sneaky. Windows Live Essentials does both. The software suite of seven Windows Live applications doesn't shy away from the marketing vehicle it is, and it also detects and updates Microsoft-related items that aren't installed as part of the pack, such as Outlook and Silverlight. Our biggest complaint is its size, which weighs in at 134MB. However, if you've got space to spare and use Windows Live applications such as Messenger, Outlook, and Windows Live Family Safety, this all-in-one bundle will help you keep things current.

"Live Mail Sucks!!!!!!!!!!!"

May 18, 2011  |  By chazzbodejazzbo

 |  Version: Windows Live Essentials 1.0

Pros

Uhh I never got to them.Maybe if I had stayed with it long enough for cross platform integration as mentioned without add ons but main deal with Live Mail is deal breaker

Cons

Just the complexity and hassles with Live Mail which is more than enough.

Summary

OK.First you have to be highly computer literate for setting up.Import from the previously simple but no hassle Outlook Express is a NIGHTMARE (CSV,API,CLV yadda yadda). The idea that they have the ability to design a simple integration into their own product while dropping support and need for doing all of it to export into other clients just sucks. Not only was contacts a nightmare but cloud load up means what was oe,two, three now is waaaaaiiiiiitttttt. This was an amazingly difficult product for the non-tech savvy and a total tun-off.Forcing one into new product with 7 (and the learning curve their) when they could have made it seamless is amazing.Makes me think I should have stayed with XP (though 7 is pretty niffty).Bing, their way of highway Etc etc.Staying with Mozilla or might go Chrome which though they will know everything I guess they would produce a more nimble and easy operating system. After Vista to turn off people this way is amazing.
Chazz

"Don't bother with this-a waste of time-"

December 31, 2010  |  By andreaborman

 |  Version: Windows Live Essentials 1.0

Pros

None as windows live messenger is not in the least bit user friendly and the other stuff, live writer and mail does not work either.

Cons

Not user friendly and live mail is just too complicated to use.

Summary

This product is supposed to be made for Windows user but it puts Windows products to shame. I have never got on well with Windows Live messenger, the video never worked and I tried it again a few days ago and nothing has changed since I lat tried it,3 months ago. I could not make any live video or voice calls as it would not let me.It would not even let me send my contact an invite to chat.So the video messenger was useless to me. Windows live mail I cannot figure out how to use it. It asks you for your outgoing server address,.How do I know that? And then it asks for incoming server address. Well most people would not know that anyway and there was no way i could find out the info Windows live mail was asking for. Why use W. live mail anyway when you can just send an email using your normal Hotmail account or other email account like G.mail?

Windows Live Writer did not work. So I uninstalled the whole thing. i have stopped using Windows Live Messenger months ago. I use Aim Messenger and this works without any problems. with Aim you just add your contact you dont even have to send or wait for an invite to chat which is great. But on W. Live you have to wait for an invite, and i did and my friend sent me an invite. But still it would not let us chat. So now if I need to talk to any one on Windows live we just use Meebo the web messenger, which lets you call anybody with no problems.

Forget Windows Live and use Aim,Meebo or Google Talk instead-they work,Windows Live does not and is the most unfriendly apps on the Internet. Andrea Borman.

"Live Mail 2011 should be pulled from the market!"

November 30, 2010  |  By rhgraphics

 |  Version: Windows Live Essentials 1.0

Pros

I haven't found any yet. It's hit or miss - 98% miss - that the program will even open!

Cons

Even on a freshly loaded machine, WLM2011 doesn't install properly. After running automatic Office updates WLM refuses to open giving an error code of 0x80041161 suggesting there is not enouugh memory or the drive is full.

Summary

If WLM needs more than 3 gigs of RAM or a nearly empty 500 gig drive, Microsoft better go back and learn how to write code. Additionally, it makes a mess of the registry. By the way, even a system restore can't straighten it out. If you like reformatting and reinstalling Windows and all your software, this is the product for you. Not for me though. The Microsoft forums are no help. Their "fixes" are merely guesses at try this or trying that. They don't know! They also like to blame AV software for the problem. During my latest go round with this junk, I intentionally did not install AV software. Even after I told them that, they suggested my AV software was the problem. I'm done with Dead Essentials!

"horrible import from outlook express"

September 24, 2009  |  By arnomd

 |  Version: Windows Live Essentials 1.0

Pros

Pretty and nice integration with chat video etc

Cons

Poor import of email and especially contacts from outlook express.

Summary

1) More than three times slower than Thunderbird 2
2) My VERY crucial criteria was a neat import from outlook express. Import with Thunderbird went pretty well, requiring only some remaining and movement of folders. With Live Mail this went bad.
Import it did, but moving folder did not work so well. Import of my 3500 contacts was just splendid with Thunderbird in the first try, but with Live Mail this went very bad. Hardly any name was copied and I weas left only with the email addresses which often are quite unintelligible - also the second and third time. It is somewhat "strange" that Microsoft is not able to provide as good a migration service for its own products than Mozilla Thunderbird.

"In terms of Windows Live Mail client..."

June 08, 2009  |  By matt5912

 |  Version: Windows Live Essentials 1.0

Pros

Windows Live Mail is the business for me in terms of desktop email clients. Integrates easily with multiple emails (I use Gmail and Hotmail), much more so than other free alternatives and without add-ons! Has RSS and built in calendar support.

Cons

The contacts feature is a little annoying, as it constantly makes many copies of the same contacts, for me anyway. Calendar could be spruced up to support iCal formats easier, and calendar subscriptions. Searching feature can be a little buggy.

Summary

Great program, and totally free. Fully featured, including multiple email support (without having to use add-ons!), RSS, and calendar features, as well as all the normal things. Works seamlessly with Gmail too.
In my opinion, best free email client available today, hands down. I'm NOT a Microsoft lover, in fact I'll avoid if poss, but WIndows Live Mail carves the competition. The likes of Thunderbird just don't compete when I have to download endless extensions to get it to work with Hotmail. The selling point for me here is the easy integration of multiple email accounts, WITHOUT annoying add-ons or extensions. Calendar support is also good, although could be improved to allow live iCal subscriptions (this can be worked around by accessing your webmail calendars though a browser and subscribing).
Bottom line: quality little program that works well with multiple email accounts, and does so quickly and easily. Calendar support a major plus.
