WinZip continues to push off last year's momentum with version 17 to persuade users that it remains significant in today's world of computing.

Much of what's under the hood remains solid and hasn't aged. The latest entry builds upon the 64-bit ZIP engine from 2011 by adding additional OpenCL support for multicore CPUs like Ivy Bridge and AMD Fusion. But in version 17, WinZip's redesigned ribbon interface and workflow takes the spotlight.

WinZip has opted to simplify the way users manage their archives with a redesigned ribbon. The language is easier to understand and bears some resemblance to a certain "office" product. Deeply ingrained in WinZip's application is now a slew of integrative additions to popular cloud services like Dropbox, SkyDrive, and Google Drive. WinZip acknowledges that users rely on many different online storage services, some even two or three, and aims to defragment the workflow of having to go to different places to manage files and accounts. By enabling direct access to these services from within its own interface, WinZip 17 lets you easily access and upload your archived files. It's a welcome addition on top of the encryption measures that come with the application. Archives and accessing multiple cloud accounts from one location felt seamless and worked well once logged in to all relevant accounts.

On the downside, users who don't have pro accounts or are working with large files will find this feature limiting. All three supported cloud services, along with ZipSend, come with file size caps at anywhere between 25MB to 50MB for the free accounts. If you want to take advantage of these services to send and upload larger files, you must set up premium accounts on your own.

WinZip 17 also includes a built-in file converter and image-resizing presets. When adding photos to archives, users can opt to set a default image size for any photos added to the archive. We can imagine this feature being quite useful for sending large volumes of high-resolution photos over e-mail. Documents can also be converted to PDFs, complete with custom watermarks.

One other feature that makes a return is the social-sharing option within WinZip: users can broadcast their ZIPs and archives to Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. The feature works about as well as in the previous version, but also lacks some critical functions we were hoping to see: you still can't tag friends or call them out specifically from within the WinZip interface, and there's not much integration with your Facebook account outside of posting a status update with the link. We found that limited notion of sharing a potentially critical file in an indiscriminate status update a bit at odds with WinZip's collective approach to creating a collaborative workflow and adding security,.

WinZip remains a slick, snappy tool for managing ZIP files, and the cloud support is a welcome addition. Though WinZip is heading in the right direction when it comes to performance and accessibility, its social-sharing attempt still remains lackluster and gimmicky. There are plenty of good things to go around in WinZip, and we were pleased with the new package overall.

"Biggest Upgrade in years"

April 18, 2013  |  By sequaj

 |  Version: WinZip 17.0

Pros

-Faster zip/unzip (many more recent benchmarks now make us the fastest of all compression packages)
-Unzips all kinds of compression formats, including RAR, TAR and 7z
-Practical Cloud connections (box, dropbox, skydrive, google Drive)
-Convenient file converters (PDF, photo resize, watermarks)
-Oversize file delivery over email

Cons

None come to mind.

Summary

Note that I'm biased since I work for WinZip, but I do invite download.com visitors to download version 17 and try it out, particularly for secure file sharing. There are some pretty dramatic changes under the hood and in the UI.

Kind regards,

JacquesAtWinzip.

"The worst company out there"

April 04, 2013  |  By falcondagger

 |  Version: WinZip 17.0

Pros

I wont buy it again

Cons

I have used WinZip for more than 10 years now. I recently decided to upgrade and bought the latest version. When I tried to install it, it asked for the Activation Code and I entered the one that I was given. Well that didn't work, Not authorized! Several Months later (I forgot I bought it previously) I bought it again. Do I need to tell you what happened? This software and company has went from being a great peice of software and company to a (word that CNET wont let me say here, but ends with @#it. Look at all the other bad reviews here and elsewhere. Dont waste your money and use the zip the comes with windows or buy another companies software.

Summary

Don't waste your time or money!

"Brought my computer to its knees"

February 01, 2013  |  By MrRefractor

 |  Version: WinZip 17.0

Pros

I can think of none.

Cons

My formerly fast computer ground to a halt upon installing this malware. I believe the AVG toolbar buried in the EULA was the culprit. I spent hours trying to uninstall it. In the end I chose a restore point, which is why I am able to write this email at all.

Summary

I had purchased Winsip years ago, and it was a useful utility back then. The current rendition is a virus. I cannot get back the hours I spent ridding my life of this, but you can turn back before it is too late.

"reply to james0987"

January 22, 2013  |  By Mita74

 |  Version: WinZip 17.0

Pros

It installed just fine

Cons

I do know the difference between accept and decline. I DL this app and I clicked on decline and it still installed the AVG toolbar also I went to the control panel to uninstall the program and it wont uninstall. it says file does not exist. meanwhile it keeps popping up on my computer where the clock is. and it is also still in my control panel where all my other programs are. I do know how to uninstall a program. I am not a certify tech but I do fix computers and know my way around them pretty well. This program either has a bug of something else cause it won't uninstall it is very agravating. I finally got rid of the tab that opened everytime I went on line, but can't get rid of the program still trying to figure this out. So yes I am sorry I DL this irritating program. unbelievable!!!!

Summary

Next time I would think twice before installing this type of program. Figured I wouldn't have a problem since I usually install & trust CNET & never had a problem before but this time I got f. oh well guess there's a first time for everything.
Sincerely dissapointed.

"my favorite"

December 02, 2012  |  By myHondaS2000

 |  Version: WinZip 17.0

Pros

Can't agree with the comments about WinRAR
If I send someone a file zipped with WinZip, they can always extract it
If I send one done with WinRAR, I may have to re-do it in WinZip, so why bother

Cons

None that I can think of

"Ticked Off!"

October 30, 2012  |  By stephlynn86

 |  Version: WinZip 17.0

Pros

WinZip works

Cons

I get ticked every time I download an upgrade because they include the AVG toolbar and search page, which take over my computer (in a way). The AVG search page automatically makes itself my homepage - how irritating is that! The AVG toolbar sets itself up without my ok also. Now I've got to go into the Control Panel and kick it all off of my computer. It should ask me prior to download if this is all ok and not just make it part of the auto-install!!

What's new in version 17.0
Version 17:
  • Secure sharing in the cloud - Direct integration with SkyDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive makes it simple to protect files from prying eyes and save on storage costs by zipping and encrypting (with 128- or 256-bit AES encryption) the files you store and share on the cloud.
  • Manage and share from the cloud - WinZip 17 lets users see and organize the files saved in their SkyDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive accounts. When sharing, WinZip automatically creates links to these files that you can easily send from your own email.
  • Zip and share files to social media - With the integrated ZipShare service, share any file format to Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, making it easy to broadcast a wider selection of content on all three social media services at once.
  • Convert and share the right file, the right way - As you zip and send, files can now be instantly converted on the fly to the best possible format for sharing. Convert Microsoft Office documents to PDF for added protection; watermark photos and PDF files; and scale down photos to more reasonable sizes without taking any extra steps.
  • Updated UI and more intuitive zipping and unzipping - Context-sensitive ribbon toolbars display the right tools for zipping and unzipping, sharing to the cloud or sending files by email.
  • ZipSend service makes it easy to send large files via email - Integrated into WinZip 17 and offering plug-in support for Microsoft Outlook, ZipSend makes it simple to send files up to 50 MB for free directly from your email without requiring you to change the way you work.
