CNET Editors' review
In our duties reviewing software for Download.com we install and uninstall a lot of programs. As we're sure you can imagine, this creates a bit of a mess on our PC. Many programs leave files behind when they're uninstalled, and since we're constantly downloading and deleting things, we end up with a lot of invalid shortcuts, broken registry entries, etc. For this very reason, we were excited about trying WinUtilities Free Edition, a suite of tools designed to free up disk space and improve system performance. We were quite pleased with the program's results.
Some of what WinUtilities does--disk defragmenting and cleanup, for example--can be accomplished using the System Tools that come with Windows. But we liked the way the program combined these and other functions into one clean, intuitive interface, making all of the most useful Windows maintenance utilities easy to access. The program contains a full complement of features to help you manage your computer's performance and security, including a file shredder, duplicate file finder, task scheduler, and much more. The program's One-Click Maintenance feature allows users to run a variety of customizable buttons with the click of a single button. The program's built-in Help file is well written and thorough. Overall, we were quite impressed with WinUtilities, and we think it's a great tool for keeping your system in good shape and free of performance-hindering junk.
WinUtilities Free Edition is free. The program installs and uninstalls without issues. We highly recommend this program to all users.

"Used to be great..."
Version: WinUtilities Free Edition 10.53
Pros
None that I can see. It has a nice UI, I guess.
Cons
NOT FREE.
Supposedly there are still "basic" free features, but I can't find them anywhere (opening the program, and selecting options, perhaps), the scans now run, and don't tell you payment is required until you go to try to fix the results. HORRIBLE STRATEGY. Immediately un-installed after reading here and realising it's not just me -- those features ARE now gone.Summary
Don't bother. This used to be a fantastic, comprehensive program to scrub the built up grime out of your hard drive...looks like they kept too much of it on their grubby grubby hands, instead.

"DO NOT BOTHER"
Version: WinUtilities Free Edition 10.53

Cons
Is is not free. This is deception.worthless!
Summary
Don't bother.

"Scam!! If you use you pay.and get unwanted extras to!!"
Version: WinUtilities Free Edition 10.53
Pros
There are none as lies and trick are not pros.
Cons
The program loads free but to use it for its intended use you pay more than it's worth. You also get crapware with it even if you check do not agree !!!! You work for your advertisers now insted of the people who trusted you. Me and over 90 people I know are no longer using this site and are spreading the word on our crappy experiences here!!!!
Summary
Bad program. Unethical useless site that has given away trust for greed!!!
-
"No longer FREE!"
Version: WinUtilities Free Edition 10.53
Pros
It was free and worked pretty well.
Cons
Not sure what happened, but not is nothing more then garbage!
-
"CNET, an advertiser OWNED company?? C'mon guys!"
Version: WinUtilities Free Edition 10.53
Pros
Cnet has been my favorite online program since I started downloading. They had my back! I didn't mind a little advertising, it's their opinion that was important!!
Cons
CNET has been my go to for just about everything I allow on my computer. Now times are tight for sure, but it seems to me that when you accept a large check from an advertiser, you should remain objective towards their product, not the number of 0's behind the number on the check. It is unethical you know, and when you guys first started, you were wholly against this type of objective "journalism". I'm disappointed as a customer as are many others that feel sold out.
Summary
I'd hate to see the graph of companies that started out honest and ethical, and ended up failing when becoming more concerned about advertisers. I think it'd look like a ski jump.

"No Longer Free"
Version: WinUtilities Free Edition 10.53
Pros
A few of the stated features still work without paying
Cons
A major feature, namely the registry cleaner, is no longer free.
It doesn't even let you know until after you have waited for the registry scan to complete.Summary
The Editor's review and the Publisher's Description need correction.
Also not happy with the fact that when I uninstalled it, it automatically opened 11 (yes, eleven!) Internet Explorer pages, all asking me why I was uninstalling WinUtilities.

"Tired of these unethical advertising partnerships"
Version: WinUtilities Free Edition 10.53
Pros
As yet undetermined, as I am dealing with the cons. I am tired of being forced into having 3rd party programs loaded on my computer, or tricked, or decieved into doing so.
Cons
CNET, WinUtilities, and to whom it may concern. My computer is not your damn advertising platform. Search engine Blekko had an ad on your installation program, and pretended to be "Accept" or "I do not accept" as if it was accepting terms. I carefully declined, and I STILL ended up with your damn program hijacking MY COMPUTER and making itself my default search engine, and making me wonder if my computer, which must be secure, had a virus. NOT YOUR ADVERTISING PLATFORM, *MY* COMPUTER. STOP THESE UNETHICAL PRACTICES.
Summary
Mad as Hell and not going to take it any more.
-
"Good file & system cleaner. Some features are fee only"
Version: WinUtilities Free Edition 10.53
Pros
does a quite thorough checking of most parts needing cleaning
Cons
Repairing invalid registry errors requires fee
Summary
Good program but previous versions did not require fee for any of the different parts as this one does. Should NOT be called a FREE program
-
"SCAM - Don't install if you don't want to pay!"
Version: WinUtilities Free Edition 10.53
Pros
If you want to know what issues your computer has it is free. But is is NOT free to fix them! So never call this free software.
Cons
If you want to actually fix the identified problems that is NOT free! So never call this free software.
Summary
I am disappointed about C-Nets misleading statement of free software.
