"Unable to use"
Version: WinFtp Server 2.1.2
Pros
As a first-time ftp server user, I was able to setup a Direct SSL ftp server with ease.
Cons
I was unable to keep the WinFTP server running.
Summary
This review is for WinFTP 2.3. I think undertand why CNET gave up on this product after 2.1.2
During the setup of the server and attempted to connect with a client. I found that any error, including attempting to list an empty directory, caused the server to go offline and close.
My work-around was to make sure my directories were never empty and I was able to connect and navigate the FTP site. However, disconnecting caused the server to go offline and close.
My work-around was to add a 2nd connection. As long as the 2nd connection was active, my main connection could connect and re-connect without problems. However, there must be an inactivity timeout in the hardware or in the software that would eventually cause the server to go offline and close.
It is possible that there is a problem with my setup. However, I have been unable to get help of any kind from WinFTP support or sales. So instead of diving into forums, I used a competitor and now I have a fully functioning FTP site.
