CNET Editors' review
As simple and fast as an electric can opener, WinASO Registry Optimizer offers a hassle-free system tuneup. It finds errors related to your Registry, custom controls, shortcuts, drivers, fonts, shared programs, and configuration files. We were pleased to find you can sort its search results--a useful feature when dealing with long lists. Before deleting found entries, the program suggests backing them up in case something goes wrong.
It also provides a simple tool for cleaning traces left by various applications, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, and ICQ. WinASO doesn't slow system performance when scanning in the background, though the trial version will correct only 10 faulty files. You'll have to buy it to get any real benefit, but PC novices and time-pressed experts will find WinASO Registry Optimizer a good addition to their PC-maintenance regimens.

"Safest In Class"
Version: WinASO Registry Optimizer 4.7.5
Pros
I have more confidence in this cleaner than any others. I have been using their products for years and never a surprise with each new release. Each version is well tested and can stand on their own without an upgrade. Speaking of which, their upgrade policy is phenomenal. This is well worth a purchase and you can't go wrong.
Cons
While overall each feature speeds up your computer, the optimizer has evolved many different ways. I generally avoid this, where this is one of the most touted by many companies today. The problem that I have is that while it has a 'restore' it must be in memory as being done by this program... more on this later.
In a past version I experienced a problem with the Registry Defrag when used in the Full settings. This only happened once and on an older version. I avoid the 'full setting' but also think this is the strongest feature, the Registry Defrag in the Quick (recommended setting) mode.Summary
In regards to the Optimizer. All optimizers touted today originated from changing the defaults setting of Windows. The default settings were decided in detail about Microsoft what would be best for "most" people. All software designed is made to fit into this behavior. However, there are a few changes that you can do with the default setting that will improve speed. It might not be the best solution and some cause problems. These changes are generally made to the registry and are well known settings that people comfortable with changing the registry can do.
This program, like others, make those changes... For instance, such as removing hanging loaded software that won't unload. Microsoft designed the OS to work a certain way and they didn't simply overlook something as simple as changing the settings so it will unload a program quickly. So these changes that I'm talking about are like removing a muffler from your car for better gas mileage or putting more air in your tires than recommended for better gas mileage.
That doesn't mean it's bad to do this and it's 100% reversible "if" your program remembers those changes. The problem I have is that it doesn't tell you the detail changes it made. So if you remove the program or go to another computer that has this done, you don't know what changes were made.
OK, the above is the OLD way of optimizing the OS. The new way includes the old and adds a lot smarter methods. For instance the feature of defragging the registry doesn't in anyway change the OS's default design. There clearly are many other methods that I don't understand or are aware of. I don't know if WinASO is best in class for this. I think one has to decide how much optimization overcomes additional ram memory. We know that ram memory is much cheaper now than when these optimizers first hit the market.
My goal is to be safer than squeezing the most blood out of a turnip. I only optimize those customer computers which are dog slow. In most cases, by cleaning up the computer with antivirus scans, hard drive surface scans with the built in OS tools along with the hard drive defrag (which is different than registry defrag), reducing the number of loading programs at startup, and WinASO registry clean and defrag, a major improvement is found with most customer's computers.
One thing you should be aware of when you or other people claim their system is slower than it was when new, is that we've had a lot of major upgrades to all Window's OS's. It almost always includes more processes running and larger processes running. This takes up ram memory and slows things down. Also, almost every new program installed checks for updates in the background. You may not be aware of it, since it might check and not find any new updates. Some poorly written software does this frequently when in reality they might only come out with a version ever 6 months. It's best to examine each and every program to see if it includes an automatic update and turn it off, so you can do it manually at your convenience. Some exceptions might be YouTube and iTunes, but let's face it, there are many that never listen to music on their computer and maybe has only a few songs, but still each time iTunes are checking for new versions and features. If you are after speed you also need to use your own needs to determine what areas you can sacrifice. In most cases if you don't have 2GB of ram on an XP computer or 4GB of ram on Win7, you are not working at optimal speed. Those power users will already be aware of the need for more ram outside the standard.
Most people are confused about the difference between ram memory and hard drive memory. Since most computers today has plenty of hard drive memory (or space), the most critical number to look at in regards to speed is RAM memory. And those that don't understand the difference are the ones that are least likely to know where to find it.
On a XP computer it is easily found by going to Start - Control Panel - System. If you don't see "System" then your computer is configured differently and then you need to Start - Control Panel - Performance and Maintenance - See basic information about your computer links. Otherwise go to My Computer and click on the link on the left that says, View System Information.
On a Win7 Start - Computer - System Properties for the ram settings. -
