Editors' review

Read a CNET review of the full version of Webroot Spy Sweeper.

This rock-solid antispyware tool gets yet another upgrade with new security features and a design overhaul, but with a limitation on spyware removal, the spyware protection of past versions is only as good as the money you pay for it. Users who are familiar with Spy Sweeper will notice the interface now looks a bit different. Though it keeps the same logically arranged structure, a new Home section should steer new users to the program's most important functions (such as starting a scan and updating definitions). The other most notable visible enhancement is the addition of a threat bar, which tells you how dangerous a certain program is. As in the past, the Quarantined section will let you restore any components should certain programs cease to function properly after a system scan. The Options icon provides access to the flexible scheduler, cookie manager, and password-protection module.

In addition to its real-time, browser, and ActiveX shields, this version adds a Spy Communication shield. This latter feature will block transfers from sites known to be purveyors of malicious programs. Spy Sweeper now also provides the ability to ferret out pesky rootkits. Though the paid version of this program offers an excellent level of protection, this trial only lets you scan your system with no option to remove. Infected systems are left with a screen of spyware threats and no way to remove without purchasing a registration code. It does an admirable job of locating every nasty program we toss its way, and its real-time protection is equally effective in stopping intruders on the fly. But without the option to remove, this trial is useless for clearing your computer of malware unless you buy the full version. While this trial is mostly a passive demo, this is definitely a piece of software we consider worth the money--the paid version is excellent. Anyone concerned with keeping malicious software off his or her computer should not bother with this trial unless you want to sample the program features with the intent of buying the full version.

"The best, and no, I'm not a paid plant"

    October 03, 2011   |   By Mantis222

    Version: Not Found

    Pros

Catches EVERYTHING, but I do have the full version and subscription.

    Cons

Constant pop-up window telling you what is being blocked, and tons of bad websites are being blocked.
But you can turn this function off if you want to.

    Summary

    Worth every penny.
This is keeping my computer squeaky clean.

    "Works, but hard to use"

    September 10, 2011   |   By v0id19

    Version: Not Found

    Pros

Never had any infection after installing, runs in background without too much loss in performance.

    Cons

Worst GUI I've ever seen--it's near impossible to find what you're looking for. Not very user friendly unless you want to use preconfigured options.

    Summary

Webroot is very effective and non-invasive (almost disturbingly so). However, it is really a pain to use. Also, it's seemingly unable to add exceptions to internet browsing security, and you must turn off the feature if a false-positive is being blocked (although maybe you can but as I said, the GUI is terrible).

    "Webroot Spyware Sweeper 5 Stars"

July 28, 2011   |   By Glenda Schroeder Boswell

    Version: Not Found

    Pros

I know it updates itself and when I turn off WiFI, I can run Webroot very quickly and get rid of lots of ad ware and cookies. Maybe this product is better when you pay for it...you usually get what you pay for!

    Cons

McAfee has now decided Webroot is a competitor, and destoyed my purchased Webroot 2011 daily. I chatted with Webroot, then McAfee and McAfee refused to work with me.

    Summary

After I chatted with McAfee, I sent that to Webroot and they called me and by remote access made my McAfee allow access and I love how fast Webroot is compared to free Malwarebytes whihc takes closer to over an hour vs 3 games of spider solitare.
