In spite of its tiny size, WavePad packs a big audio punch.
The app furnishes plenty of tools for recording and editing sound. WavePad's interface is fairly well-organized, and the Command Bar feature provides quick access to the most frequently used functions. WavePad supports a variety of popular audio formats, including MP3, OGG, WAV, and WMA, and it includes a ripping function.
Once you open a file or begin recording via your sound card, you'll see a large rendering of the waveform, and you can choose to apply edits to the entire track or only certain parts. The application lets you open several files at once and move sound fragments among them, and the inclusion of a batch-conversion utility is a nice touch. WavePad offers a decent number of basic effects, such as noise reduction, normalizing, fading, amplification, echo, changing speed and pitch, and reverb, and you can preview any edits before saving. There are also text-to-speech and speech recognition functions, impressive for a free app.
All told, this utility's many capabilities and lack of restrictions make it a fine pick for all but the most advanced, hard-core audio junkies.

Version: WavePad 3.14
"Caveat emptor. They throw you on the barby like shrimp."
Pros: Pro: WavePad is very good software. It's NCH's slippery license paragraphs, obfuscartion, and weird Rube Goldberg key code procedures for installing the software that makes it unattractive.
Cons: The review above, "You must be wary in purchasing from NCH Software" by RandalOulton says it all. READ IT. NCH is a collection of Australian characters with the most confusing of restrictive reinstallation rules. Just hope you never have a crash.
Summary: Note how NCH handles uncomplimentary reviews. Only the critcal reviews also receive an opposing, favorable "Editor's Review." Even if the complaint is exclusively about NCH's business practices, their editorial response is always about how great the... read more >>

Version: WavePad 3.14
"You must be wary in purchasing from NCH Software."
Pros: I purchased this product in July of 2008. Website & activation process were *very* confusing but I got through it after a determined hour.
Cons: Redownloaded from the website 1 Jan 2009 to reinstall on a new computer.
Summary: Discovered they had snuck the version number up by a fractional decimal point to correct some bugs in the software AND that you must repurchase the software all over again for any new versioning, including their fixing their own bugs. To force you ... read more >>
