Waterfox is a 64-bit version of Firefox. The browser's developers modified the Firefox source code specifically for machines running 64-bit versions of Windows. Software designed for 64-bit Windows editions can take advantage of faster RAM and processing speeds and greater stability in 64-bit systems. Just converting Mozilla's source code for 64-bit Windows doesn't do enough to make Waterfox stand apart from Firefox and other Firefox-based Web browsers; other unique tweaks help it exploit the speed of 64-bit systems. As the Waterfox Web site states, speed is its mission.

When we first opened Waterfox, it displayed our bookmarks and other personal data from Firefox. When it comes to looks and extras, Waterfox doesn't disappoint in a side-by-side comparison with the latest Firefox release. Waterfox has a family resemblance to other Mozilla-based browsers, with a dark blue Start button instead of Firefox's orange. Otherwise, Waterfox looks and functions like Firefox, including its various customizable features and options. Our add-ons, extensions, and plug-ins worked in Waterfox, too, including Microsoft's Office and Silverlight plug-ins. Waterfox also has regular updates.

We could tell with just a few quick trips to familiar sites that Waterfox is fast, so we visited some of our favorite browser speed test sites to see how it stacks up against the competition, including Firefox and our current default, Chrome. For the most revealing results, we threw Peacekeeper's HTML5 torture test at each, pitting Waterfox against the site's Chrome benchmark and our own copy of Chrome.

This online benchmarking tool separates the smartphones from the gaming desktops with a series of increasingly grueling tests that took some 5 minutes to run through. Waterfox bested Firefox but not Chrome, both in speed and HTML5-rendering capability, though the results were close enough to make it a matter of choice. Raw speed tests with CNET's Bandwidth Meter produced much closer results. Chrome held a consistent edge, but Waterfox is fast, too. Subjectively, it "feels" fast, which might be the advantages of 64-bit operation. In any case, we like Waterfox a lot. If you prefer Firefox but run 64-bit Windows, give Waterfox a try.

"Not impressed enough to stick with it."

December 09, 2012  |  By Gordon_Hay

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 16.0.1

Pros

None readily apparent - no noticable difference in speed or usability - seems to me to be less smooth than FF

Cons

Some FF extensions don't work with Waterfox and when you revert to Firefox to use them you have to install them again.

Summary

Why would you accept less functionality of extensions etc. for no discernable benefit.

"Not worth even one star"

November 26, 2012  |  By SeniorCitizenSacramento

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 16.0.1

Pros

Absolutely none.

Cons

While downloading I got a pop up that Norton had blocked "adware crossid".

It did not work. All I got was a white screen with a google logo. I could not kill that page and had to manually power off.

It did not uninstall properly, took 2 tries.

Malware bytes found 2 instances of pup.crossfiee.sa on my computer.

Summary

Not ready for Beta.

"Pale Moon is better"

November 07, 2012  |  By lootyhoof

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 16.0.1

Pros

It's 64-bit and it's Firefox. What more can I say?

Cons

It's built using an Intel compiler, which by default cripples users of non-Intel hardware. Plus, in terms of 64-bit Firefox builds, Pale Moon is better. While benchmarks might not say so, that's because of the way that the tests are performed; Waterfox is most likely PROFILED on these benchmarks during compile, to artificially boost them.

Summary

In short, while this is still good if you're looking for a 64-bit Firefox, I'd still suggest Pale Moon. Pale Moon is specifically optimised, meaning that it runs much faster than you'd expect. Plus, the design direction of it is just much better overall (it ignores some of the 'features' introduced by Mozilla...), and isn't biased to Intel processors like Waterfox.

"Disappointed with download"

November 07, 2012  |  By crispyguy

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 16.0.1

Pros

Might have been nice to try out

Cons

While installing i made sure to look there was no other software packed with this that you had to uncheck. So i sat there and read everything on the screen before clicking next. But while installing bitdefender pops up with adware blocked. And i see something called coupon companion and amazon toolbar show up in firefox. Very unhappy with download.com right now. Installing that stuff without my permission.

Summary

I would download this from somewhere else.

"The best browser got even better!!!"

November 06, 2012  |  By dzadelis

 |  Version: Waterfox (64-Bit) 16.0.1

Pros

Faster than Firefox 32-Bit, but still the best browser around.

Cons

Nothing so far.

Summary

I Love Mozilla!!! Far beyond: faster as well as more advanced and reliable compared to all the other browsers.
