    "Promising but doesn't work"

    January 04, 2011   |   By peterbjoernskov

Version: WTV H.264 to MPEG Converter 3.2

    Pros

I cannot come up with one single.

    Cons

The programme convert the file but without sound and it runs until you choose to stop it.

    Summary

I'm disappointed and it is a waste of money/deception.

    "Promising but not operational"

    December 25, 2009   |   By JYBER

Version: WTV H.264 to MPEG Converter 3.2

    Pros

Good idea to have such a converter to convert H.264 files that W7 cannot convert

    Cons

    Does not work.
Produces Mpeg files without audio stream
    Runs for ever
    No log file

    Summary

I have purchased WTV H.264 to MPEG Converter on dvr-ms.com website..I've tried, for two days, to use it and I have decided to uninstall it definitely. This product is not operational. It provides either MPG files without audio stream, or runs for ever. No log file is available to understand what happens.I therefore asked for a full refund of this product 29.50 $

    "Good idea but unreliable"

    December 09, 2009   |   By thehobster

Version: WTV H.264 to MPEG Converter 3.2

    Pros

Can directly convert a file created by Windows Media Center that was captured using a Hauppauge HD PVR to MPEG2. This is handy because you can then easily do frame level editing for things like commercial removal. Reasonably fast.

    Cons

Will only work on maybe 1 out of 10 files on my system. There is no feedback on errors. When it fails, the conversion process just runs forever (status indicator goes to 100% but never stops). There are no log files for determining failures.

    Summary

I had high hopes for this application. It was about the only application I found which would convert my Hauppauge-generated WTV file to MPEG2. The kind of file cannot be converted to a DVR-MS file within Windows. Once I get the HD file into MPEG2 format, I could easily do frame-accurate editing. Other editors claim to edit H.264 files but doing so causes video/audio sync issues.

The first couple of conversions worked well for me. After that, it just stopped working. I've un/re-installed several times without affect.

The biggest problems I have are that 1) there's no feedback when a failure occurs and 2) there's no way to look at log files. Re #1, this makes me feel like this is more beta level and needs more testing. I can understand not having good error messages, but I would assume that any error condition should be trapped and not cause the application to run forever. If there's some kind of error in the stream causing a transcode problem, the application should trap for that and either issue an error or outright crash. Running forever without feedback is a no-no in my opinion. Re #2, as the product matures, I would expect logging to be added.

In all fairness, the author is usually fairly fast to respond to requests for support, but it's obvious my issue is going to have a technical level of detail he's not prepared to accept just now. Not that he's incapable of doing it, but I'm thinking he's used to helping and answering simple user questions. Obviously my problem is not simple. He did say he would add logging in a future release.

Bottom line: promising but not yet ready.

If you MUST convert to MPEG, use Nero Vision. It's slower, but it works.
