Publisher's Description
From Hamrick Software:
VueScan is an inexpensive program that works with most scanners to produce high-quality scans that have excellent color fidelity. It takes advantage of the advanced hardware capabilities of most scanners on the market today, and helps you do batch scanning while at the same time producing color-balanced and cropped images.
What's new in this version:
- Added support for Scan Elite II, including multi-sampling
- Fixed problem with frame number not displaying on some scanners
- Fixed problem with LS-8000 and SS120 and medium format framing
- Reduced width of sliders from 100 pixels to 75 pixels

"Stalls. Won't load even after downloading a new cop."
Version: VueScan 9.0.63
Pros
For this version - none. I can't get it to load no matter what I do. The last version worked flawlessly but this one is seriously bad.
Cons
Won't load. I tried several times and even deleted the downloaded a new copy of the application. I deleted all the preference files before installing again. It still freezes even though the log file says all is ok and it finds my HP B210 scanner.
Summary
This has been an outstanding product for years. But this release sucks.
VueScan now works. Richard Hamrick emailed me with a suggestion to restart the scanner. As I had already done this, I didn't think it would work. But after a second restart of the printer, the software now works as well as I am used to. Support is excellent and the software is top-notch - when it recognizes the scanner. Please ignore my previous review.

"Really great software"
Version: VueScan 9.0.63
Pros
It has a shallow learning curve. I had it up and running with my ancient Epson flatbed in moments. It did a great job of scanning slides with my transparency adapter but I soon tired of the lack of quality the flat bed offered. I bought a PlusTek transparency scanner and gave Silverfast a whirl. Good software but steep learning curve. I returned to VueScan for comparison and now do the vast majority of my scanning with VueScan. The color rendition using white balance is far superior to Silverfast.
I have e-mailed questions twice and within a few days gotten a reply from the developer himself. He solved my problem both timesCons
Silverfast beats VueScan in dust and scratch removal but I only use Silverfast for really cruddy slides.
Summary
I recommend purchasing this product. It delivers what it promises and then some.

"On my Mac for years; keeps getting better"
Version: VueScan 9.0.60
Pros
Frequent updates, even for older scanners. Beats the pans off the often impossible-to-follow needlessly iconified Canon software with those I have now. Works fine in "idiot mode'" but encourages user growth by simple-to-understand optional features. Gets better results than manufacturers' software and when you've bought it, you're a customer for life, with good tech help even if you've changed machines. I love it!
Cons
It does what I can't do with any other software, even the manufacturer's, and it's updated much more often.

"Still the very best scanning program for Mac."
Version: VueScan 9.0.60
Pros
Intuitive and easy to follow. Many variations available to utilise.Far and away better than any other scanning program I have used.
Cons
Haven't found any yet.
Summary
Far and away the best scanning program I have every used.
Far and away the best scanning program I have ever used.

"new version got worse"
Version: VueScan 9.0.58
Pros
Works well with most if not all scanners
Cons
Microtek ArixScan M1. VueScan was great on ScanMaker 8700 but now:
1. Default output way too light. Needed to tweak luminosity.
2. Software makes the scanner calibrate on preview and before scanning. Way too long. Microtek software did not do it.Summary
For certain scanners tweaks are needed, like for some Microtek scanners. Was very fast, got very slow. Probably, the issue is scanner-specific.

"Made my Epson 1600 Pro still useable"
Version: VueScan 9.0.57
Pros
Good range of settings; easy to use; works with all three of my scanners ( two Epsons and a Canon)
Cons
Cannot think of a real down side
Summary
One of my better software buys
-
"Solid performer with no glitches"
Version: VueScan 9.0.57
Pros
It keeps on performing with several of my scanners and operating systems. IT worked better than the Epson software on my mac and better than the HP software with windows XP on my networked HP photosmart all-in-one.
Cons
Takes a while to get to know it.
Summary
I have been using Vuescan for years. The software from the scanner manufacturers always has something that does nor work and you can spend a lot of time trying to make it work. While you are doing this you can still work with your new scanner using Vuescan. I paid for the licence once and I am still using all the upgrades on that original licence.

"Very nearly worthless"
Version: VueScan 9.0.57
Pros
It got my scanner to operate after my Epson driver went south and inexplicably the downloadable Epson driver no longer works with OS10.6.x
Cons
Where to start? Too many to summarize here. See "Bottom-line" summary. The short version: this is not for professionals.
Summary
1) Quick-start mode gives no controls for your scan.
2) "Advanced" mode has too many controls that are of dubious use and not enough practical ones.
3) final scan parameters bore no relation to the ones I had set, e.g. I would set a scan for 300% magnification @ 300dpi and would get a scan of 100% @ 300dpi or 300% @ 100dpi. Things like that.
4) Image controls are terrible bordering on useless.
5) Attempts at tech support were very time-consuming and insufficient.
I am very sorry I paid the doubled price for the profession version. I haven't a clue what I got for that either (which is just as much a knock on myself, to be honest) but hey, when you have a massive scanning deadline hanging over you and your scanner driver dies, you have to act fast. Tho I met my deadline it's time to find another driver. -
"No tech support & couldn't register software to use it."
Version: VueScan 9.0.57
Pros
None could not use the software
Cons
There is no tech support to assist with trouble. While I got a serial # and a customer #, the system would not recognize it to allow me to register the software and use it.
Summary
Unless you can identify a source for tech support, do not buy the software.

"Buy it now!"
Version: VueScan 9.0.57
Pros
Very reliable, I know only one small bug.
Cons
Just missing ability to combine other documents when scanning multiple pages to pdf.
