Version: Visual DataFlex 12
"Fast and easy object oriented development for professionel Applications"
Pros: VDF is a fully object oriented developement environment and the language is 4GL not a 3 GL like C# or Java. You are able to write source code that is readable like a documentation (nearly).
The connection to databases in order to develop data centric apps is highly integrated in the concept of the environment, framework and class lib of VDF. The concept is really independent from a specific DBMS. You are able to run the same application under Oracle and SQL Server without changes of the sourcecode.

Version: Visual DataFlex 12
"Fast, easy visual development"
Pros: With Visual DataFlex Studio, application framework, class library and rich set of pre-programmed, data-aware controls and components, the design and implementation of Windows and Web applications is a structured, well managed process. Integrated source-level debugging helps track down and fix problems quickly and easily. Studio can fully integrate custom class libraries and generate application code based on custom libraries. Component Explorer enables the loading of multiple Components and source-code files on separate tabs.

"Great enterprise development tool. The darn stuff just works!"
Pros: Having used Dataflex for over 20 years I know of no other product that is better suited to database application development. It has it's own native database and there are drivers for DB2, MSSQL, & ODBC. There is a VERY knowlegable and generous worldwide developer community that is over the top in supporting the product and helping each other on the newsgroups. At a recent conference of about 60 developers, there were about 1000 man years of experience in the room. Developers use this stuff because it WORKS! You will often hear comments of "If I have to give up Dataflex, I guess I will just quit programming."
This product is OOP done right. The software based data dictionaries are unique in the industry and very powerfull and complete. The development tools are extremely productive and well suited to RAD environments. There is an excellent library of classes supporting data presentation and management. Is supports COM controls and has classes for XML, FTP, rich edit, and the normal form and grid controls. Their data update model has been stable for 20+ years... Lock, reread, backout, update, write, & Unlock.
The tool suite includes WEB application development and a WEB App content management application (Electos). These guys have got database WEB application development down right. Database security is TIGHT with all data access done through a COM interface. With care, there is no way you will ever get your database hacked with this stuff.
Data Access Worldwide has assembled a top notch development team that has been producing amazing upgrades to the product on a regular basis with one MAJOR upgrade and one or more minor releases every year.
In summary... an extrememly rich development environment for database application development. Don't expect to learn all it's nuances in a weekend although once you have it mastered, you will be able to work with it for the rest of your life.
Cons: Most MS based developers are going to fuss about some of the language syntax. It really is not closely alligned with most modern development languages but it has been amazingly stable over it's 20+ year life.
The development studio does not interface with any version control software (yet).
