Publisher's description
From Avery Lee :VirtualDub is a video capture and processing utility licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It is designed to be a general utility that can trim and clean up video before exporting to tape or processing with another program. It does not possess the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. VirtualDub has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files, which you can extend with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is best at processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and handle BMP image sets.
Version 1.8.1 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

Version: VirtualDub 1.8.1
"A great open-source video editing offer!!!"
Pros: Virtualdub may not be fully featured as a commercial program like Premiere Elements and VideoStudio, but it makes up for it by allowing the user to add a number of filters to help in converting video files from one format/codec to another.
Every new release tends to quash as many potential bugs, and open-source plug-ins help to expand the functionality and video filters needed (e.g the deinterlace filters have proved to be very helpful to me when I had to covert video to DivX, which I have yet to find in commercial programs - highly recommended!)
Quite stable with most video files unless you load a very massive file which might lock up/crash the program.
Able to read most codecs if they are installed.
Cons: The user interface may not be friendly to beginners, but a few hours will easily help in navigating to the necessary functions that the user would need!
Wish it was also available for the Mac OS X since now that they are Intel-designed, which might serve as a potential point to help in porting it in the future.

"My favourite video editor..."
Pros: Does everything you could want once you figure out all the features.
Cons: When you first open it you throw your hands up in confusion.
Summary: I love this prog. Translates just about everything into everything, edits clips conjoins etc. But I've learned to love it over time. When I first got it I was onto a steep learning curve but one that's worth the effort. So many filters, so much expe... read more >>
