From Avery Lee :VirtualDub is a video capture and processing utility licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It is designed to be a general utility that can trim and clean up video before exporting to tape or processing with another program. It does not possess the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video.
VirtualDub has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files, which you can extend with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is best at processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and handle BMP image sets. Version 1.7.7 build 28312 includes unspecified updates.

Version: VirtualDub 1.7.7 build 28312
Pros: Has multiple filters and has the ability to add more filters. Great compression options and is just wonderful!
Cons: Limited import and export formats. It also only supports wav audio(Although mp3 support is visible in 8.0)
No timeline and can only import one song per project

"Great for preparing video for editing"
Pros: Power of performance in a small package. Works great in processing video, can also be used to add subtitles to videos.
Cons: Can only export to AVI.

Pros: In less than 5 minutes from software installation, I had an excellent video quality clip, with synchronous audio, using Virtualdub, after 1/2 hour fidgeting with and trying to troubleshoot both Sonic MyDVD and Windows Movie Maker.
